San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick says he refused to stand during the national anthem Friday due to his views on the country's treatment of racial minorities.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media after Friday's game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

I watched “Hard Knocks” on HBO the other night. It is an inside look at the L.A. Rams training camp. Before the opening exhibition game, Coach Steve Fisher gives a talk to the players about the importance of the national anthem and why it is such an important part of the game. He showed a video of the Rams standing for the national anthem. Coach Fisher told them how to hold their helmets and where to stand.

Go Rams!

I find it interesting that some minorities (e.g., Asian, Indian), while being discriminated against, don't have the degree of discrimination that blacks do. The question is why? Could it be that blacks have done things that make non-minorities more discriminatory towards them versus other minorities? Fact is, blacks have serious issues (e.g., the breakdown of the black family) within their own communities and I see very little being done by blacks to fix those issues. Instead, they seem to prefer playing the victim and then rioting and looting as the way to address those problems. Not an effective way to solve your own problems.

He can believe whatever he wants, but it is middle America that pays his salary. You would think that you would be a little more respectful of the hand that feeds him. I USED to be ambivalent about Kaepernick. NOW, he can go f@@# himself.

Ok, you are an intelligent guy, lets test your viewpoint with a quick look around your locker room.

Can you find any of your black colleagues who are forbidden by the country to make millions of dollars?

Hmmm, wonder if there is something altogether different than "oppression" at work here?

He's a white guy. One with enough body art to cover 3.67 other people as well, but still your basic (albeit ill-informed) white guy. His career zenith was as a senior at Nevada...it's been all downhill for the poor bastard ever since.

He even showed some promise as a rookie in SF, but since then he's just sucked worse than a Hoover the size of Saturn. Probably all that ink slowing him down.

The article I read, and if you simply google his name and salary, says he is guaranteed $61 million. Regardless, it is a ridiculous salary especially for such an ingrate.

According to wiki source "Kaepernick was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Heidi Russo, a 19-year-old woman who was single and destitute at the time. His birth father, an African American, was out of the picture before he was born."

So the White person stays to raise him, while the black man shirked his responsibility and ran off.

But Colin blames white people.

I think Colin Kaepernick just ended his football career. Now he's free to go fight racism and oppression.

Kevin Greene was a Captain in the National Guard when he played for the Rams in the 1990s. Joe Cardonao of the Patriots is in the Navy. Ahmard Hall played six years for the Titans after being a Sergeant in the Marine Corps. Jeremy Staat played with Tillman at ASU, then in the NFL before going into the Marines. Alejandro Villanueva is an Army Ramger and NFL player. Daniel Rodriguez was an Army Sergeant who got a tryout with the Rams but got cut in training camp.
