The larger problem here is the politically popular welfare system that makes such fraud possible in the first place. The notion that my past military service obligates America to provide me with medical care for the rest of my life is hugely popular but fiscally ruinous. Truly debilitating wounds and injuries are one thing, and we owe truly disabled vets some compensation for permanent injuries that impair gainful employment. But anything more reduces America’s veterans to just another interest group with their hands out.
