Colin Kaepernick sits during national anthem; 49ers defend move

Colin Kaepernick, who has been mired in a quarterback controversy with Blaine Gabbert to see who will lead the 49ers this season, may have sparked a real controversy Friday night.

Kaepernick did not stand for the national anthem before the 49ers preseason game at Levi's Stadium, although the move went unnoticed by most at the time. ProFootballTalk.com reported the story more than an hour after the game, and no reporters asked Kaepernick about it following the 49ers 21-10 loss to the Packers.

But Kaepernick's action prompted the 49ers to issue a statement acknowledging that he sat during the anthem, and defending his right to do so.

“The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony," reads the statement. "It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose to participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem.”

That stance will not sit well with many fans, however, and Kaepernick is sure to hear the boos in opposing stadiums as the media shines the spotlight on his decision. Was Kaepernick, who has been outspoken on his Twitter account about racial issues in the U.S., making a political statement? Expect to hear much more on this story in the coming days.

Another biracial a-hole abandoned by his black father and raised by white people, who suddenly becomes the blackest thing that ever blacked.

This is less a public policy issue than a psychological one.

This is a perfect opening for Trump coming off of Hillary’s guilt by association ploy.

All the anti Americans on Twitter supporting Kaepernick are Dems. So does Hillary support Colin Kaepernick?

This will drive a wedge with her base.

I’ve been a fan of the San Francisco 49’ers since the 1950’s.

I’m NOT a fan of the San Jose 49’ers.

This seems to be a trend, even though some are denying it.

Kaepernick has the physical talent to be an outstanding QB in the NFL.

Unfortunately, the guy is slow mentally and unable to read even simple defensive schemes. He had early success using his legs but paid a price.

Defensive coordinators have adjusted to his style of play and have had success stopping him over the last couple of years.

The 49ers tried to dump him but he couldn't find any interest. He's failing on the national stage and not dealing with it well.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game against Green Bay. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street...”

I won’t be buying anything that a-hole endorses, sponsors or whatever. Won’t be watching any 49rs game either. BTW how are the Dixie chicks doing compared to where they were before they dissed the U S overseas.

We have people dying defending that flag and all for which it stands. Not only standing, but everyone should be singing the National Anthem, not just some bit singer.

Yes we should.

Reminds me a bit, at the recent Olympics, one of our swimmers was singing the national anthem at her medal ceremony.

I forget her name but she has dark hair and has really big teeth. Anyway, it was a pleasure to watch her sing our national anthem as it was played for her medal ceremony.

The NFL and the 49’s should also recognize the right of fans who regard that anthem as sacred, not to go to their games, watch their games on TV, buy their licensed products or services or patronize the businesses endorsed by members of their organization who disrespect the anthem of the Country that made their freedom to sit on their ass possible.

He is protesting his own success. Obviously an expression of "black guilt". I'm sure he would be more comfortable with a system that guarantees equal outcome instead of equal opportunity.

I am a lifelong Niner fan and I would definitely NOT
want to see the punk blow out his knee. Injury is a
legit excuse. He needs to be shown the door because
he has neither the brains nor the physical ability
to make it in the NFL. He deserves to be embarrassed
rather than pitied.

The NFL has rules regarding jerseys being tucked in
but nothing that addresses respecting the nation’s
anthem? The Niner organization would love to pedal
Kaepernick so in public they cannot make it look
like his actions give them concern. In private they
should be wondering if this idiot is out of his f’n
mind.

Didn’t Michelle Obama say the USA is the greatest nation on earth during her speech at the DNC?

Didn’t Hillary Clinton scold Trump and say “Don’t let anyone tell you that America isn’t great?”

But this multi-millionaire I’ve never heard of - but is apparently bi-racial and raised by white people - won’t stand for the national anthem because he says America is oppressive and racist?

I’m SOOOOO CONFUUUUSED!!!

I have not watched the NFL for years and don’t intend to. A bunch of multi-millionaires playing a game? No thanks.
