THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

IRVING BERLIN

”ALWAYS”

Deanna Durbin is largely forgotten today, the question to a “Jeopardy” answer, but she was a popular teenage movie vocalist of the Forties. This song was featured in the 1944 movie “Christmas Holiday.” That’s Gene Kelly pretending to play the piano. The way the pianist worked the chord change in the middle of the chorus will make your screen go blurry. The song works beautifully in E-flat.
