IIRC, Colombians murdered one of their soccer players for performing poorly (years ago).

Colombian narcos who lost a lot of money betting on the team murdered him. Medellin, where he was murdered, was narco-syndicate central with one of the highest murder rates anywhere.

It's changed a lot since the rise of the Mexican cartels and the destruction of our borders. They can just walk here now. Why operate out of Colombia?

I always had kind of a vague sense that we spent untold billions attacking them in Colombia, disrupting operations, so they just moved over to Mexico. I could be completely wrong, could be entirely different people, but the timing was kind of right.
