Russia’s 'Super Hunter' Helicopter Gunship to Become Immune to Enemy Fire
Sputnik ^ | 26.08.2016

The latest, upgraded, version of Russia’s Mi-28H “Night Hunter” helicopter gunship will be virtually invulnerable to enemy fire, Zvezda TV reported.

Even though it looks much like its predecessor, the Mi-28NM “Super Hunter” boasts the latest and most innovative materials available and is armed with the most advanced active defense systems money can buy.

The “Super Hunter” is also equipped with circular-view radar previously installed on export models only.

However, according to the makers of “Super Hunter”, the NO25E radar offers a notable improvement over even the export-oriented unit. Another thing making the souped-up Mi-28NM so special is its unique laser system designed to deflect all existing heat-seeking missiles.

The moment the system “learns” about the helicopter being illuminated by enemy radar, it creates an invisible “fire cloud” near the rotorcraft effectively deflecting incoming missiles which, failing to engage their imaginary target, self-destruct.

Improved rotor blades will add 10 percent to the helicopters’ maximum speed of 340 kilometers per hour.

Sort of the “Titanic” of helicopters”?

Okay. So the solution is a gun firing a big, dumb, high-velocity slug. Problem solved.

Sukhoi, does those stubby little wings provide noticeable lift at cruising speeds?

Nothing stays “immune” for very long. In warfare.

I’m thinking they’re more aero hardpoints for the missile racks than they are lifting bodies. The AH-64 has similar “wings,” but on a helo, especially at lower airspeeds, I would think any lift from those features is minimal.

I could be wrong. Any experts want to weigh in?

So a shoulder fired IR guided SAM - which never illuminates the aircraft with radar energy - will defeat it? Or the Mark-I eyeball and AA gun...

Or someone throws a few million at one of the defense contractors and they make the seekers on the air-to-air missiles multi-mode, maybe even home-on-jam and you become a beacon and guide them right in...

You’ve got to give them credit, the Russians can build some badass helicopters.

Yes. The also provide stability and weapons hard points.

A few 1000 dollar toy drones with C4 strapped to them can take this out. Helo couldn’t hit them because they are too small. Probably can do the same thing on the battlefield. Let every soldier carry a toy drone kit that they can outfit with a multitude of small, innovative weapons.

Agreed. Hard points with fairings to minimize drag at higher horizontal speeds. Helicopters take off vertically. They don’t require stationary airfoils for lift.

In the lower picture, you can see that the winglet does appear to have an airfoil shape. I can only assume that they gave it a lift-generating shape so it can at least contribute to holding the craft in the air when running flat-out, sort of the line of thinking that it couldn’t hurt and might help.

They are hardpoints only, you are correct.

Technically speaking, helos Shouldn’t even fly, they break so many “rules” heh.

As someone else said, fire a solid projectile, it probably won’t dodge that.

Unless the drone can get to hull contact, C4 by itself isn’t going to do much, and would any drone that small and that slow be able to get through the rotorwash? A helicopter that heavy is going to push a LOT of air.

No lift involved with hard points.

The Russians have a long history of, shall we say, ‘overeggagerating’ their weapons.

“So the solution is a gun firing a big, dumb, high-velocity slug.”

No, the real solution is an electric Gatling gun, like those in an A-10 ground support airplane, firing several hundred dumb, heavy, spent-uranium slugs a second.

Tube of flame from Gatling goes up. Wall of flame engulfing “invulnerable” helicopter comes down!

Thermobaric fuel air bomb detonated 200 feet beneath flight altitude.
It will fall like an anvil.

The A-10 would be moving faster than that helicopter and might not have much time with its cannon on the target (it would not need much). I would think the single barrel cannon on our Apache would be just as much or more effective.
