APD: Mom, boyfriend arrested in disturbing rape and murder of 10-year-old girl (Albuquerque, NM)

Charges have been brought against three people in connection with the horrific death of a 10-year-old girl at a westside apartment complex.

Police found the slain girl inside a unit at the Arroyo Villas Apartment Complex on Irving Boulevard near Golf Course Road on Wednesday morning.

Late Wednesday night, 31-year-old Fabian Gonzales and 35-year-old Michelle Martens were booked into custody. Police say they are dating. 31-year-old Jessica Kelley was hospitalized, an APD spokesperson said, and will be booked after she is released. She is Gonzalez's cousin. Police also confirmed Martens is the girl's mother. According to APD, the three tortured the girl by drugging and raping her.

"They injected this little girl with methanphetamines to make her calm down so they could do what they wanted to do to this little girl," said APD spokesman Tanner Tixier.

She was stabbed and strangled to death. Police say the three then tried to dispose of her lifeless body.

All three are charged with kidnapping, child abuse resulting in death, and tampering with evidence. Gonzales and Kelly face rape charges.

Both Martens and Gonzales were bloodied and bruised during the arrest. Police say it was likely caused by them fighting each other after the murder.

Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden said his officers responded to the apartment around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday for a battery call. Eden said there was some kind of altercation at the apartment and some people involved had serious injuries.

That is also when officers discovered the girl’s body. The department has not released the girl’s name.

Eden wanted people to know his investigators would thoroughly examine the crime scene.

“We are working thoroughly on this case to build the right case, to build the right charges,” he said. “Our investigators are combing through every piece of evidence at this home. We will not rush this investigation.”

KOB reporters at the scene saw investigators focusing on a balcony on a second-story apartment at the complex. They report the APD also brought in a cherry picker for detectives to look down at the apartment’s roof.

A reporter spoke with a woman, Laura Bobbs, who knows the girl very well. She said the girl’s birthday was Tuesday, a day before her body was found. Bobbs said she and the girl planned to celebrate the child’s birthday Wednesday after school with manicures, pedicures and cake.

"Who does this? I counsel people. I council people in grief. I'm a grief counselor. I have a degree in psychology. You would think I would be stronger than this, but when it's you that it happened to, who's going to council me? Who's going to help me through this?" Bobbs said.

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez said responded to the child's death, saying, “there are no words that can convey the sorrow and sadness I feel for the innocent child who was killed in this atrocious attack. What happened to this little girl is unspeakable, and justice should come down like a hammer on the monster who committed this murder.”

Or, you could have spent a few seconds looking at the name - Gonzales - and realized he was likely Hispanic.

It's New Mexico, more than 50% of the surnames here are Hispanic, and roughly half of them are conservative, with many who post on FR, I'd bet.

I have a lot of very conservative friends and acquaintances who have Hispanic last names, and they would be right there with me willing to drop the hammer on these three.

Don’t know much about the oh, so cool “designer” drugs but one commentator to local ABQ media mentioned that it was spice. What it’s effects are or if its a cousin to meth etc. I have no clue.

That was my first thought too.. Calm her down??? Meth does the opposite.

I have never understood why people do things like this, especially to a child. It’s bad enough to rape a grown woman, without drugs or any kind of torture. But a kid?? Sick...

I’ve looked into this kind of thing for years, trying to understand it. Serial killers mostly. Ted Bundy, Jeffery Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, Green River Killer and a number of others. Usually they share some specific traits. Abused as children, tortured animals, loners at a young age, often actually very intelligent, Ted Bundy went to law school and had an IQ probably in the 120-125 range, well above average, most are charismatic and can easily get along with almost anyone...Many also are fixated on a specific type of person, like Bundy. He always went after women who resembled an ex girlfriend...longish light brown hair, specific height, thin...

So something inside clicks one day and you have a monster on the loose...I’ve never been able to understand what that is that suddenly snaps. I’ve read many books on them, watched documentaries, I see some parallels, but still don’t understand it...

And when someone does this kind of thing to a 10 year old girl, words are not quite sufficient to express the reaction. Outrage and disgust is close...

Someone already noted on every good point. The tendency toward more lenient treatment by the courts is not helping at all, and more “humane” conditions in prisons, along with early release, is making it worse. Felons know they won’t spend all of that 20 years in prison, will have 24 hour cable TV, heating and AC, free medical and dental, all the books they can read, free education, free legal services, no work requirement, then get out early enough to still have 20 years or more to live...and I think it’s over 60% of them are back behind bars within 2 years. “Rehabilitation” is obviously not working...

Death penalty...yep, I’m all for it. But that means they will often live longer than if they were in the general population. Ted Bundy was convicted of at least a half dozen murders, admitted to a reporter many more, at least 36 total, and lived more than 15 years on death row going through appeal after appeal. Some on death row right now have been there 20 years.

And the dumbass politicians that made it possible wonder why the crime rate is as high as it is...I don’t know for sure, but when I was younger we found out in school some countries, like Lebanon, had very strict laws, probably Sharia or related. If you were convicted of theft, your hand was cut off. Second offense, other hand cut off. If you figured out how to steal again, off with your head. And it didn’t take 15 years of appeals...I wonder what their crime rate was??? I don’t think it came close to what we see here today.

And once again, this is another part of the reason Trump is the candidate they are terrified of. He wants to bring back law and order. Exactly what the politicians in this country have worked against for a long time.

True. In this particular crime, we seem to have a diverse mix of trash. All three of which need to be sent to the landfill.

I love that they appear to be in “evidence bags” — also, I read the comments under the story, someone notes that the mother met the man online and after a week had him and his cousin move in with them. SO DISTURBING ON EVERY LEVEL!!!

Don’t know much about the oh, so cool “designer” drugs but one commentator to local ABQ media mentioned that it was spice.

Spice (and K2), IIRC, is(are) a mix of herbs with a synthetic cannabinoid. It's not marijuana.

From Wiki on Synthetic Cannabinoids: Synthetic cannabis is claimed by the manufacturers to contain a mixture of traditionally used medicinal herbs, each of which producing mild effects, with the overall blend resulting in the cannabis-like intoxication produced by the product. Herbs listed on the packaging of Spice include Canavalia maritima (coastal jack-bean), Nymphaea caerulea (blue Egyptian water lily), Scutellaria nana (dwarf skullcap), Pedicularis densiflora (Indian warrior), Leonotis leonurus (lion's tail), Zornia latifolia (maconha brava), Nelumbo nucifera (lotus), and Leonurus sibiricus (honeyweed). However, when the product was analyzed by laboratories in Germany and elsewhere, it was found that many of the characteristic "fingerprint" molecules expected to be present from the claimed plant ingredients were not present. There were also large amounts of synthetic tocopherol present. This suggested that the actual ingredients might not have been the same as those listed on the packet, and a German government risk assessment of the product conducted in November 2008 concluded that it was unclear as to what the actual plant ingredients were, where the synthetic tocopherol had come from, and whether the subjective cannabis-like effects were actually produced by any of the claimed plant ingredients or instead caused by a synthetic cannabinoid drug.

Is there any doubt that Satan, Lucifer, the Devil, the Evil One, etc. (He has many names), is the god of this world?

“Serial killers...usually they share some specific traits...”

I read about a study of psychopaths which noted that almost all in the study had been separated from their mothers before the age of three, for a significant period of time. Ted Bundy’s biographical data was included in the study.
Birth to age three is the time when babies bond with their mothers thru breast or bottle feeding.
They are held, kissed, smiled at. Thus they bond with another person and experience the exchange of basic emotions-—gratitude, need, tenderness, protectiveness, empathy.
The psychopaths in the study had had this bonding process disrupted and had failed to develop these normal human emotions.
As children and developing adults, they’d had to study other people in order to **mimic**normal emotions.

Yep, that and other traits are usually present with serial killers, wish I could remember it all. Too much info crammed into this old head. I think it was Dahmer was also separated from his mother, Ed Gein went full tilt psycho when his mother died, she had been an intensely demanding, controlling mother all his life, told him from childhood how wicked women were, still had him living at home completely under her thumb when she died.

Reading about Gein was a cross between interesting as could be and scary as hell...he ended up killing at least 2 women and robbing a number of graves to make clothing and other items from skins he got robbing graves. Also suspected of killing his brother. Here are some things found at his house when he was finally arrested.

Human skulls mounted upon the cornerposts of his bed

Human skin fashioned into a lampshade and used to upholster chair seats

Human skullcaps, apparently in use as soup bowls

A human heart (it is disputed where the heart was found; the deputies’ reports all claim that the heart was in a saucepan on the stove, with some crime scene photographers claiming it was in a paper bag)

The head of Mary Hogan, a local tavern owner, found in a paper bag

And more...from here

http://www.wisconsinsickness.com/ed-gein/

Really sick puppy. It’s been surmised that the personality of Hannibal Lechter, the character in Silence of the Lambs, was a composite derived from traits of Gein, Bundy and one other, I think it was John Wayne Gacy or maybe Dahmer. Gein was also part of the character Buffalo Bill, that part seems to be confirmed. Looking at Lechter, if you know anything about these types, traits of several can be seen.

Sick stuff, I know, but not well understood by the general public at all, most people see little more than the news reports, which often don’t have anywhere near the true scope of the horrendous acts committed by such people. Many people know Ted Bundy killed at least 36 women. Few know he raped some of the last few after killing them, used various weapons and his bare hands, preferred Volkswagens, and had the passenger seat removed to make it easier to get them in and hidden...He also told one reporter that the official body count was one digit off. (Ann Rule I think it was) She never knew if he meant 136 or 360...she had also worked in the same office with him at one time, while his killings were in progress. She wrote an excellent book about Bundy.

Just found this looking around for some other facts, since it’s hard to remember all this. “Murderpedia”, which looks like a pretty reliable site, with several articles about Gein and an alphabetical index. I’ll be looking through there for more...I’ve studied this stuff for a long time. Just one of the many things I’ve done some serious digging into...it’s interesting, if you can stay detached and view it as an academic exercise...

I had a scary encounter when my car—a Volkswagen— was disabled late one night, and a guy “coincidentally” happened by and offered me a ride into town, but then he turned the opposite direction and drove toward an abandoned dirt road.
Long story short, I ended up jumping out of his Volkswagen —which was weirdly spray-painted, as if to disguise its color—and running for my life. An old black guy in a Ford Galaxie came along and whisked me to safety.
The next day when I returned to my car, I found my tire had been slashed on the inside sidewall. I realized the guy was probably planning to kill me and switch cars.
Years later, I started reading about Ted Bundy, including the Ann Rule book. I became about 95% certain the guy in the Volkswagen who tried to kidnap me was Bundy.
He looked like him, the MO was the same, and I had had long hair parted in the middle, like his other victims. The VW beetle and the timing were the biggest clues. My encounter was on the I-10 interstate —which runs from CA to FLA -—and was shortly before he ended up in Florida where he butchered those sorority girls.
I never notified any authorities, though. Ted was dead, already executed by the time I connected the dots. Why bother?

Just wow. How close you came. My meeting was just a nod of the head as I entered the room that he was leaving. It was only after the fact that I was told who he was (by some very surprised and sheepish co-workers!).

My encounter with Ridgway was stronger and more deliberate. Gary worked in the paint shop at Kenworth where I worked as a line mechanic. I had several “bump into” encounters with him on the line as he moved painted cabs out of the dryer to the line to be installed.

We chatted at times and I thought nothing of it. He was quiet and unassuming and mostly kept to himself. Later someone pulled me aside and asked if I knew who he was. As far as I knew he was just another drone on the assembly line.

“That’s Gary Ridgway” my friend whispered.

“So what?” I replied.

“Gary Ridgway, the Green River Killer” he hissed.

I found out that he had been pulled from the line about five or six months earlier and questioned about being in the vicinity of several murders on the SeaTac xtrip. I also noted that they let him go so I shrugged it off.

After about a month of chit-chats we were on a first name basis and he invited my wife and I to dinner at his house. Intrigued and not a bit frightened I accepted. My wife wasn’t concerned either.

We met at his house and he showed me his place and his backyard garden, which faced Interstate 5. All very pleasant, all rather innocent. In retrospect I don’t think that my wife and I were his type.

He was picked up soon up and that was the end of him. I received one visit from the Task Force asking why I was at his house. I told them the truth and that was that.
