Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21, who had been working as a bartender for the past six months, was knifed in a frenzied attack in front of 30 horrified witnesses.

Another Brit, named locally as Tom Jackson, is fighting for his life in hospital after reports that he was stabbed up to 15 times.

It has emerged the knifeman also stabbed a dog to death as he rampaged through a room of around 30 people on Tuesday night.

Cops have now arrested a 29-year-old man who they say screamed extremist Islamic prayers during the attack.

A backpacker who did not wish to be named said he knew the alleged attacker.

He said: "He was a really calm guy, he was always happy. We’re all like a big family at Home Hill. It's very hard not to know anyone’s business.

"One of the guys tried to prevent it from happening, Tom Jackson, he was stabbed in face 15 times from what I’ve been told."

The man taken into custody has been transferred to hospital for treatment for what police believe are non life-threatening injuries sustained in the incident.

He is a visitor to Australia who has been in the country since around March on a temporary visa and has no known local connections, Mr Gollschewski said.

He said they were still trying to find out what he has been doing in the country since his arrival but he was not known to police before the attack.

Police are not searching for anyone else in relation to the incident and there is no known ongoing threat to the community.

Mr Gollschewski added: "This is not about race or religion. It is individual criminal behaviour."

I didn't know this woman, but I am impressed how attractive she was.  I know that may be a bad thing to focus on now, but it causes me to think it would have been nice to get to know her.  It would have been nice to be with her, if her personality was good too.

I look at her and wonder where this world is headed if Western women of beauty are to be targeted like this.  Across Europe we see Wester women being raped at will.  What I don't see is anyone of authority showing any backbone, and demanding this s--t stop right now.

Our leaders need to pull their heads out, start coming up with a plan to end this sort of thing.  And yes, if that means removing anyone associated with Islam back to where they came from, then so be it.

This cannot continue.

Those that converted to it here, should have to accept the blame for those in their midst who meet that same qualification, who carry out abysmal acts.

If Christians were doing this, it wouldn't be ten minutes before there would be calls to fix Christianity.  Islam's ten minutes are up!

I think it happens so fast and the craziness of it puts people in that freeze or flee mode. Perhaps if just one other person had a knife as well, they could have had the guts to do something. (I’m not going to say a firearm because that is a mute point there). These kids are not trained at all. Perhaps someone could have smashed something over his head. I’d like to say I would have. Remember those two Marines in Belgium who stopped the terrorist on the train. Their training went into practice. Perhaps, people need to start training for this type of reality, I don’t know.

I think that societal conditioning has a lot to do with it, rather than lack of training.

Many years ago, a lone assailant would not have gotten away with that.
