OAKLAND (KPIX 5) — Scores of California students may be sent home on their first day of school because of a new vaccine law that took effect this year. The new state law took effect July 1. Now, parents can no longer use personal or religious beliefs as a reason not to have their kids immunized. This school year, kindergartners and seventh graders must show proof of immunizations.

Monday WAS the first day of school for kids in Oakland. Hundreds of them were expected to be sent home.

"There could be a few hundred kids that are not immunized and so we'll be encouraging them as quickly as possible to get out there," said Oakland Unified School District John Sasaki. "Their parents may try to drop them off and we'll have to turn them away."

Young children who got their personal belief exemptions approved before January 2016, will be grandfathered in. According to the new law, they still must get immunized when they reach seventh grade...

Shame on you Jack for over simplifying the issue, ie: Polio shots in the 1950’s outbreak, versus current aggressive vaccination practices in USA.
Many of us health conscious people have well founded concerns about the efficacy, side-effects, ingredient safety and aggressive dosage schedule.

It was established in 1986 at the demand of Pharma in order to insulate them from vaccine injury liability.

They judge the injury evidence harshly, and have thus far awarded Two Billion dollars to thousands of vaccine injury victims.

It’s not just a binary matter of vaccinate or not to vaccinate.
We need full disclosure and development of vaccines that have safer ingredients, and a far more responsible conservative vaccination schedule like what European and Asian countries have in place in order to reduce child vaccine injury.

RE: When I was in 3rd grade in the 50s, I remember the school closing because of an outbreak of polio. Several weeks later they opened the schools again. 5 or 6 kids in the school did not return. One died and the others could no longer walk suffering from infantile paralysis. That’s a lot of reality for a third grader to absorb. Two or three years later they had the Salk vaccine and we lined up gladly to receive it.

People mow fear the vaccine. The diseases they prevent are far worse.

Allowing total strangers to inject unknown junk into one’s child is beyond irresponsible. Most parents never exercise or understand diet. Most parents do not grasp that 50% of all drug studies are fraud. That is sick behavior.

If a child accidentally grows up smart, they should trash their parents for gross neglect and possible permanent harm. It is a definate deal breaker.

Parents are comfortably fine because children are naive and ignorant. But if they crossed an intelligent, well read adult, the parents would whine, run and hide. It is easy to abuse children but adults speak back.

Get off the Doctor Kildare modern-medicine-can-do-no-wrong TV land programming and look at vaccine schedules, and autism rates of peer countries.
The US adopted increasingly aggressive vaccine schedules in the late eighties, ie: US 36 doses by age 5, vs 15 doses by age 5 in European and Asian first world nations.
Incidentally the US vaccine schedule used to be 17 doses prior to 1983, and our autism rate was four times less than what it currently is.
That’s where the problem lies.

And interestingly enough, Trump stated that quite correctly and clearly a number of months ago when the media tried to gotcha him.
Many higher educated / income parents and their pediatricians are erring on the side of caution by spreading out vaccinations over the course of a child’s first six years.

First, vaccines are not injected directly into the blood. Most of them are injected into muscle, but some of them can be injected into the skin. Some vaccines can be administered orally or nasally.

Second, dead viruses or fragments of virus or bacterial proteins do NOT have a more severe impact on a child's immune system than living pathogens. Living bacteria literally eat flesh, regardless of whether they are called "flesh-eating" or not. If a child does not have an adequate and appropriate immune response to bacteria, that child can become seriously ill and even die. Active viruses literally enter cells and take them over, forcing them to make more virus particles while preventing them from performing their natural functions. Once again, if a child does not have an adequate and appropriate immune response to viruses, that child can become seriously ill and even die. Some bacterial or viral infections can leave a child permanently damaged. Ever see pictures of polio victims?

I fail to see how the real risk of serious illness and potentially death is somehow more dangerous than an injection into muscle of dead viruses or bacteria, which are completely broken down into their component amino acids, lipids, and sugars by the body within days.

These days, people take for granted the freedom from disease that vaccines have given us. And since they have never seen massive numbers of children dying from infectious disease, or the kids permanently crippled from diseases like polio, or kids born with birth defects because of diseases like rubella--because they have never seen these horrors which were so common as little as 100 years ago--anti vaxxers always find people gullible enough to believe their lies.

The claim that the MMR vaccine causes autism was a complete fabrication by a shady "doctor" who was looking to make money dishonestly. First, he wanted to make money by selling a measles vaccine in which he had a financial interest. People don't want to give their kids three separate shots when one will do; thus, there is little market for a measles-only vaccine. Also, he was partnered with a lawyer. Together, they planned to sue vaccine manufacturers--the fraudulent article purporting to show a link between MMR vaccine and autism would have been published proof of the "expert testimony" the "doctor" would have provided on behalf of the lawyer's lawsuits. The Lancet made a mistake publishing that article. It was retracted years ago, and the dishonest "doctor" had his license to practice pulled.

The reason for the supposed increase in autism has nothing to do with any real increase in the number of cases, but in diagnosis and in changed definitions. In the past, most autistic kids were considered mentally retarded. But now they are more precisely diagnosed, so that the number of mentally retarded children has dropped and of autistic children has increased. In addition, researchers are beginning to uncover the real causes of autism. Characteristics of autism indicate that it has a strong genetic component. There also seems to be some indication that mothers who have high fevers during pregnancy have a greater chance of having an autistic child. I look forward to the day when all of the causes of autism are finally understood. That is the day when anti-vaxxers will have to find another way to hoodwink people.

Think about it. Vaccines are responsible for saving more lives than any other medical invention in history. Anti-vaxxers--those who push anti-vax kookery, like Barbara Loe Fisher--know this perfectly well. Yet they go around trying to convince people to be more afraid of vaccinating their children than they are of having their children die from preventable diseases. That is, the anti-vaxxers want children to die. Why do you even listen to them?

FYI, I am a medical researcher, and I happen to know a LOT about vaccines and infectious disease. Don't bother trying to snow me with anti-vax propaganda. Others have tried, and gotten nowhere. I feel very strongly about protecting children's health, so of all the medical nonsense out there, this is the one I routinely choose to debunk.

In order for something to cause something else, there has to be a clear mechanism. For example, measles causes brain damage because viruses enter brain cells. The infected brain cells no longer function as brain cells and the immune system kills them. The more brain cells that are destroyed in this manner, the more severely the brain is damaged. That is a mechanism. On the other hand, dead viruses injected into an arm muscle are nowhere near the brain, are incapable of entering cells, and are completely destroyed within a few days. There is no mechanism to tie them to any brain function. Imagining that vaccines are somehow capable of causing autism is like imagining that filling your car tires with air is somehow going to cause the air intake filter to become dirty.

This statement shows that you clearly have no clue about the medical research world or the regulatory process. First of all, researchers don't "feel" they know a lot about microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, chemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, etc. They know their expertise, and they are very cognizant of the limits of their knowledge. Being a biochemist, I have a very good understanding of how the biomolecules that make up living organisms function, and how their functions are disrupted by pathogens. On the other hand, if you asked me about kidney function, I would have to consult the medical literature before giving you an answer.

The process to bring a drug from discovery stage to regulatory approval is very long and drawn out. Unlike in your fantasy world where it seems you imagine that each time a chemist mixes up a new compound, he then rushes off to the FDA to get permission to make it into pills and sell it, in the real world, chemists mix up hundreds of compounds that are then painstakingly screened before the most promising among them is selected for further testing. This discovery process takes years. Once the most promising drug candidates are selected, they undergo several more years of testing--first, on cells, then on animals, and only then on humans in phase 1 trials. Fewer than 1% of all prototype drugs (including vaccines) make it past phase 1 trials. In the rare cases where a drug prototype does not get nixed, the journey from discovery to regulatory approval can theoretically take ten years--but only if all the stars line up. In reality, the process takes 15 or 20 years (or more). Furthermore, a drug cannot be used in a specific group of people unless it has been tested in that group. So, for example, if a vaccine is tested in adults between ages 18 and 65, it can only be administered to that group, and not to anyone who is not within that age range. In addition, most countries have a requirement that drugs have to be tested on their own citizens before they will license those drugs for sale in their countries.

Wakefield was not trying to research vaccines. He subjected a few children to dangerous invasive medical procedures. He was not using an approved research protocol. He never consulted an ethics board prior to that "research." The dangerous procedures he inflicted on those children had nothing to do with the testing of vaccine safety, and no child participating in a real vaccine safety trial would ever be subjected to such abusive treatment. His license to practice medicine was pulled for very good cause. I don't know about you, but there is no way I would trust a psychopathic "doctor" who is willing to perform unapproved unethical and dangerous experiments on *my* children.

Yeah, right. It is a favorite tactic of those trying to argue against science to fall back on claims of logical fallacies when they cannot actually refute any facts. When a bona fide expert makes a statement based on his/her knowledge and experience within their field of expertise, he or she is not, in fact, committing a logical fallacy. Your claim of knowing PhD medical researchers is irrelevant--just because I know veterinarians does not make me an expert in animal health. And your claim that Ph.D. researchers are clueless outside of biology has a rather false ring to it. Stupid people are not accepted into PhD programs. It is also an assumption that most people who work for government are liberal. I have not done a study to determine the breakdown of liberal vs. conservative in government, but I do see plenty of other conservatives every day when I come to work at my government job.

There is nothing wrong with being motivated by a strong feeling that children should not suffer and die from preventable diseases. And your statement that "science is... not allowed a single error" only shows how profoundly you do not understand the scientific method. Humans are fallible--hence, the effort to incorporate very robust systems of checks and balances into the scientific method. Also, I have no clue what "fallacy" you are going on about--so I must conclude that the "fallacy" is the standard fall-back position of those who cannot refute an argument based on facts.

And since you cannot present any facts to refute the assertion that vaccines save lives, I think there is not much reason to spend more time on this.

Universal hepatitis B vaccination was recommended for U.S. newborns in 1991; however, safety findings are mixed. The association between hepatitis B vaccination of male neonates and parental report of autism diagnosis was determined. This cross-sectional study used weighted probability samples obtained from National Health Interview Survey 1997-2002 data sets. Vaccination status was determined from the vaccination record. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds for autism diagnosis associated with neonatal hepatitis B vaccination among boys age 3-17 years, born before 1999, adjusted for race, maternal education, and two-parent household. Boys vaccinated as neonates had threefold greater odds for autism diagnosis compared to boys never vaccinated or vaccinated after the first month of life. Non-Hispanic white boys were 64% less likely to have autism diagnosis relative to nonwhite boys. Findings suggest that U.S. male neonates vaccinated with the hepatitis B vaccine prior to 1999 (from vaccination record) had a threefold higher risk for parental report of autism diagnosis compared to boys not vaccinated as neonates during that same time period. Nonwhite boys bore a greater risk.

BACKGROUND:

The presence of SV40 in monkey cell cultures used in the preparation of the polio vaccine from 1955 through 1961 is well documented. Investigations have consistently demonstrated the oncogenic behavior of SV40 in animal models. Early epidemiologic studies were inadequate in demonstrating an increase in cancer incidence associated with contaminated vaccine. Recently, investigators have provided persuasive evidence that SV40 is present in human ependymomas, choroid plexus tumors, bone tumors, and mesotheliomas, however, the etiologic role of the virus in tumorigenesis has not been established.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Using data from SEER, we analyzed the incidence of brain tumors, bone tumors, and mesotheliomas from 1973-1993 and the possible relationship of these tumors with the administration of the SV40 contaminated vaccine.
RESULTS:

Our analysis indicates increased rates of ependymomas (37%), osteogenic sarcomas (26%), other bone tumors (34%) and mesothelioma (90%) among those in the exposed as compared to the unexposed birth cohort.
CONCLUSIONS:

These data suggest that there may be an increased incidence of certain cancers among the 98 million persons exposed to contaminated polio vaccine in the U.S.; further investigations are clearly justified.
