Police say 20 trained southern Muslims did tourist bombings

Gen Chakthip said police know the meeting points of all the suspects and their travel routes before and after their bombing missions.

Most of the perpetrators were followers of Islam from the three Muslim-dominated southern border provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani. Many of them were previously unknown to police, but others were linked to violent attacks in the southernmost provinces.

He refused to comment whether any had dual Thai-Malaysian citizenship.

“The incidents appear to be the work of the new generation, as we have had no profiles of several of them. The veterans [from the southern separatist movement] may have played a supportive role. This makes the investigation quite difficult,” Gen Chakthip told a media briefing.

“Officials, however, have evidence that there are more than 20 people in this network. We believe all of them received training before carrying out the coordinated attacks.”

We used to have condo in Phuket. It was a good escape from Hong Kong. When I was younger I did the Triathlon there each year.

It is an odd place. Both seedy and suitable for little kids at the same depending on what block you are on. I had friends there when the tsunami hit. They were not hurt because they’d taken the kids for an elephant ride rather than going to the beach.

The ride from the airport to the hotel area is hair-raising.

All I know is this, I know they are sneaking over our southern border here in Texas. I think if they pull off a Breslan school incident or a Nice driving incident here in Texas, at that point we may lose our patience.

Oh they are great fun. Kids love it. They use elephants that are too old to work in the timber camps. They have a trail that they walk on that is about a 0 minute trip through the jungle.

Phuket has great night markets and restaurants. I once saw a really beat up Chinese clone of an AK-47 with a full clip in a stall there with a bunch of knives and other “outdoor gear”. The guy wanted $30 US and I wouldn’t pay more than $25 I have no idea what I’d have done with the thing if I’d have bought it. I don’t know if it would even fire

Ha! I had a friend who’d disappear maybe three times a year to go there. From what he reported, “You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant” in Phuckit. Or something like that. I’ve never been.

Ouch! That is about the worst news possible for Thailand and its tourist business. Puket and Bangkok are misleading in what you hear about the sex trade. The sleezy districts are easy to avoid and it’s easy to find family entertainment and beaches.
