2016 Is Shaping Up to Be an EXACT Repeat of 1980 …(Except Carter Wasn’t So Sickly)

Via Hennessey’s View:

You probably remember that in September 1980 voters were couldn’t wait to cast a vote for Reagan.

If you remember it like that, you remember wrong. At least a little wrong.

TIME magazine examined voter sentiment in its September 15, 1980, issue. Voters that year sounded a lot like voters this year. Here’s how Ed Magnuson summarized the voters of 1980:

Disenchanted, but not apathetic. Caring about issues, although much more concerned about character. Longing for a strong person to trust, but fearful of strength lacking sound judgment. Leery of weakness, but edgy about brashness. All too mindful of the disappointments of the past, but seeking hope in the future. Leaning toward one man, but often out of desperation and a sense of disdain for the others. Uncommitted. Unpredictable.

1980, people knew Carter was weak and bumbling, but they were afraid Reagan might blow up the world. In 2016, we know Clinton is crooked and sickly, and some people are afraid Trump might blow up the world. (In fact, almost every Republican candidate since Goldwater was supposed to blow up the world. That charge is getting pretty stale.)

The Numbers Are Remarkably Similar

When you look at the numbers from about the same period, you find incredible similarities between Clinton vs. Trump and Carter vs. Reagan. Since Rasmussen is the only major public poll looking at likely voters (as opposed to registered voters), we’ll use that.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online White House Watch survey of Likely U.S. Voters shows Clinton with 41% support to Trump’s 39%. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson picks up nine percent (9%) of the vote, while Green Party nominee Jill Stein trails with three percent (3%). Three percent (3%) like some other candidate, and five percent (5%) are undecided.

While I empathize with the writer for trying to come up with a comparison, Hillary is far worse than Carter.

Carter actually is a Christian by comparison to her, and he’s no Christian.

I’m pretty sure that Trump, as a share of population size at the time, got a higher % of primary votes than Reagan did.

This is true. CA was sympathetic and winnable for the GOP until about 2000, Schwartzenegger notwithstanding. In 2000, if I recall, CA still had a GOP governor, attorney general, and one US senator.

Carter was the incumbent. Reagan was a former two term governor of a huge state.

Aside from the fact that Jimmah was a dem and Ronnie was Rep, there isn’t much in common.

If he comes out here and delivers his message, I think he does.

He needs to attack California with skill of a combat commander. He is very much in play with folks who traditionally lined up with the Left.

The illegal immigrant is a small subset of the Hispanic population, and legals are not at all happy with what they have been up to.

It’s a mistake to buy off on the Democrat and GOPe mindset on this.

I miss the Gipper.

Yes, I agree with that.

Almost lost me a few times during his disgusting presidency.

(pure disgust to the max)

I think Trump wins in a monster vote, but then again Carter had 18% interest rates on national debt that barely registers today and somehow we have added trillions of debt with no interest rate.

Things are definitely being massively manipulated.

Like anything there are a lot of variables. The hostage crisis-—if it had ended six months earlier? Who knows. If oil prices had fallen some, who knows?

More than anything, I think Carter lost the American people when he delivered his “Malaise” speech (never used the word) and blamed THEM for the state of the union.

I think that our “Hostage Crisis” comparison hasn’t coalesced yet. If the Turkish military base thing hadn’t calmed down, or if Russia marched into Ukraine a year ago he would have it.

For now, The possibility of Trump having that “The hostages are freed” moment may not happen.

If it does, it’ll be a Chinese aggression and I don’t want to think about that. If the Chinese take out a naval patrol or take American hostages while Obama is in then we are more screwed than you may think.

But if that were to happen with Trump - Lemme tell ya.. the Chinese do NOT WANT TRUMP which makes me want him 100 times more.

It would be so fantastic for the chicoms to kiss our ass for a change.

If you look hard enough you can find comparisons to anything and to read however you want.

This isn’t 1980.. this is one f—ked up country in 2016 with ~50% of the population that is clueless, useless and looking for hand outs.
