Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte railed against the United Nations on Sunday after it called for an end to the wave of killings unleashed by his war on drugs, saying he might leave the organization and invite China and others to form a new one.
Two U.N. human rights experts last week urged Manila to stop the extra-judicial executions and killings that have escalated since Duterte won the presidency on a promise to wipe out drugs.
About 900 suspected drug traffickers have been killed since he came to power after winning the election on May 9.
Duterte on Friday denied that the government was responsible and in a middle-of-the-night news conference in his home town, Davao, said the deaths were not the work of the police and invited U.N. experts to investigate themselves. …

The UN has problems with reducing drug abuse? It’s almost as if they profit from it or something.
Why is the UN trying to reduce dug abuse and who is paying for it? The less they do, the better the world will be. One of the most money grabbing corrupt organizations anywhere.
The UN is important there because old Carlos Romulo, President Quezons PR guy and great international celebrity of the 1940’s was a big backer and early organizer of the UN and was an early UN secretary-general.
He participated in some of the great events of those days, among them he got the Phil delegation to arrange for a positive vote for Israel in 1948.
CPR was also the go-to guy in organizing votes favorable to the US among the ‘third world” of the day, and was a player in the Cold War PR struggle.
So its a big deal for the sake of one small man, but these are good reasons. The country has been proud of this.
In a historical perspective the Philippines turning its back on the UN is big.

It wasn’t the UN. It was America and allies and who is still there now? The USA still defending South Korea.

Get your head screwed on straight. OUR TROOPS did the fighting! OUR troops are still there. THAT IS WHY SOUTH KOREA IS STILL FREE! Look what happened in Vietnam!!!!!
Vietnam was “US and allies” (which didn’t include Britain); Korea was UN troops (combat units from about 15 countries, including Britain, Turkey, Canada, France - all the ones you see in MASH episodes - the COMBAT WOUNDED from other countries).

I’m quite aware of the other countries which contributed forces to these wars. What you are missing is the question who shouldered the burden and is still shouldering the burden?
Sixteen UN nations supplied fighting units and five sent military hospitals and field ambulances in Koreaa. Australia was one of the very first to contribute military personnel from all three services. The single largest UN contributor was the United States of America (USA) which at one stage had 140,000 personnel deployed in direct combat roles in Korea. Great Britain, Canada, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Colombia, Ethiopia, South Africa, New Zealand, Turkey, Greece, Thailand, Philippines and Luxembourg sent fighting units. Norway, Sweden, Denmark, India, Italy contributed military hospitals and field ambulances to the cause.
The United Nations Command (UNC) provided the core military and strategic direction for the anti-communist war effort in Korea. The USA provided the high command for the UNC as well as the vast majority of the logistics, air and naval power, artillery and military infrastructure which made possible the continuation of the war despite repeated reverses suffered due to the actions of an aggressive, determined and proficient foe. The British Commonwealth sent the next most numerous of the UN contingents. As well as Commonwealth air and naval units, the 1st British Commonwealth Division, in which Australian infantry battalions served, took part in some of the hardest-fought battles of the war.
I think you will note it was the US that contributed the vast majority of logistics, etc.
Vietnam, unlike Korea, was not fought under U.N. mandate. It was a war of entirely different characteristics from any other war we had ever fought. Our Military won the battles, but the Politicians gave away the victory. I will despise our so called leadership during this war forever and that includes that sniveling idiot John Kerry who should have been tried for TREASON along with Jane Fonda!
I think it is an important point that a UN mandate existed in Korea but not Vietnam; in the latter we were winning battles for a country that never allowed elections (because “our side” would have lost them).
