Watch out for these new telephone scams to steal your money

They are extremely persistent and claiming to be the IRS and threatening to throw you in jail and all kinds of things,” the 76-year-old Torrance resident said. “They try to make it sound official.”

In the past month, the IRS and several South Bay police agencies have issued public warnings about the IRS scam and similar cons perpetrated by thieves on the telephone.

“You are never going to get a call from the IRS demanding an immediate tax payment,” IRS spokesman Raphael Tulino said. “A lot of folks will hear it’s the IRS and act out of panic or dismay, and provide what the scammer wants. The normal correspondence to the taxpayer is a letter in the mail. It’s not a random threatening phone call.”

The “real” best thing is to always see “who” is calling on the display on your phone before you answer. We’re about to give up our wireline phone because you have to pay AT&T to block calls or you have to buy a piece of equipment to do it. On smart phones you can simply block them yourself. I have more than 100 in my current iPhone. And any call that comes in with no caller ID goes away immediately. But the worst part of it is AT&T gladly gives these telemarketers the lines they use to assault us. Neat trick, give out the lines, then charge your other customers a monthly fee to stop the calls. AT&T is the biggest $hit company in the world!

My land line is kept on mute. I never answer it. Most are robocalls but one of those IRS fakers actually left a voicemail.

Some people answer the phone without a caller caller ID displayed or with a caller ID not on their pass-through white list?

Why would anyone do that?

We get these a couple of times a week. We never pick up. Regrettably they are always robocalls. I’m waiting for one of these turds to be a human so I can pick it up and tell them to come and take what they want. If they think it’s worth their life.

I also think it would be humorous if we did a coordinated FReep calling these numbers back several hundred times an hour for a couple of days..

Been getting these bogus call for several years. Still waiting for the public warning from the Torrance PD.

Should be common sense if you ask me. Never do business over the phone unless I initiate it by placing the call.

My husband plays with them. I just don’t have the time or inclination, so I let him answer the phone.

These fools have called me many times over the last 3 or 4 years. We let the answering machine screen calls for us, so we have never answered. Always a foreign accented voice, and sometimes they even leave a non-US call back number. I know there are people caught by this, and I don’t want to tar them, but for goodness sakes, THINK, people!

I got a call from someone saying they represented Micro Soft about 3 years ago (heavy Indian accent), they told me that I had some horrible computer virus and if I gave them my password and a credit card number they could fix it.
I just told them that they were too late; I had noticed my computer was freezing up, so I just took it outside and shot it to put it out of it's misery.
The guy asked me what I meant by shot it; I told him “you know, I took it outside and shot it right in the hard drive with my 45 caliber Ruger Long Colt, it died instantly”.
You could hear a butterfly's wings all the way over in India (looonnngg pause); he just said “I am sorry sir” and hung up.
Never heard from them again.
I would love some body to call and tell me they are from the IRS and threaten to come arrest me; I could finally tell some one “MOLON LABE, do you know what that means?”. Weird thing is though; I really was having computer problems, nothing a few phone calls to my son couldn't fix.

I won’t even do banking business over the phone here; and I know all the LADIES (it’s capitalized because they are real ladies) at my bank (only 1100 people in our town).
