They are phasing out older AC, but this is like cash for clunkers removing vehicles with economic value being scrapped early. There is a cost of interfering with the phase out cycle.
Mericans don’t mind paying more for tickes. after all, it’s for the children and Pangea.

Actually, many of them are shorter range airliners like 737's and A320's that have a LOT of takeoff-landing cycles on them and reached the point of the end of their airframe lives. They're already starting to scrap 777's built in the 1990's because those planes have reached the end of their rated airframe life.
