The Death penalty is not a deterrent. Torture is a deterrent. It hurts and makes one feel uncomfortable. Most people don't like pain. If they understand that there will be PAINFUL consequences to their actions, the will not engage in those actions.
This is not a complicated argument.
Whether or not the death penalty is a deterrent does not matter. Justice in this case calls for death.
