John McLaughlin, the host of TVs The McLaughlin Group since its debut in January 1982, died on Tuesday at age 89. The political commentators passing comes just days after he missed his first hosting of his eponymous syndicated public affairs program in more than 34 years. I am under the weather, McLaughlin explained in a note that prefaced this past weekends telecast. His distinct, once-bellowing voice, heard in pre-taped intros, was weaker than usual, McLaughlin acknowledged. Yet my spirit is strong and my dedication to the show remains absolute!

Is she not repulsive?!?!?
Bill Buckley’s Firing Line predated The McLaughlin Group by a couple of decades, but I agree that TMG was, if not exactly novel, at least entertaining.
Speaking of PBS, is Mark Russell still around? I used to love watching his shows, his songs were always great, and he gave it to both sides pretty evenly.
Used to watch his show every Sunday...then I got a TV with a remote....Ealanore Clift-— *CLICK*
Rest in peace, Mr. McLaughlin. I really enjoyed your show, and you definitely improved this world by being a part of it. You were a class act and will be missed.
You nailed that one - very funny, thanks for the laugh and the memories.
I was into the radical early stuff.

WRONG. Is what we call the show
Mark Russell seemed to disappear about the same time the Simpsons made fun of him.
A real classic.
I prefer this SNL cold open, when even the band is WRONG.

I watched McLaughlin Group 2 Sundays ago and he looked and sounded terrible.
“Only PBS personality I ever liked.”
Have to disagree with you on that one....I also really liked Louis Rukeyser.
I was very surprised a few weeks ago when he mentioned how unusually qualified Hillary is to be president.
And Germond’s description fit, of course, Reagan and Bush themselves.
That’s Eleanor Rodham Clift.
Speculation during the Bush years was that McLaughlin turned more liberal to keep up with his much younger second wife.
But that marriage didn't last either. Maybe two divorces made him cynical.
