The Commission on Presidential Debates announced the five polls it will use to determine candidate popularity as a measure to secure a spot on the debate stage. The commission has hosted every general election presidential and vice presidential debate since 1988 and requires candidates to be polling at least 15% in an average of five national polls to be eligible to participate.

Those five polls will be ABC-Washington Post, CBS-New York Times, CNN-Opinion Research Corp., Fox News and NBC-Wall Street Journal for the 2016 debates. The commission said those five polls were chosen with advice from Frank Newport, the editor in chief of polling powerhouse Gallup.

If those five polls were averaged as of today it would be: Clinton: 44%, Trump: 36%, Johnson: 10%, & Stein: 5%

If we use a 5% cut-off, we’re going to have a four way debate.

That may change by October.

They will be push polled to include Johnson in order to triangulate Hillary as the only “woman” candidate.

So they use media manipulated polls to determine who gets to debate?

I have a feeling Johnson will magically find his 5 points and stein will be around -10 because she would pull the most from Hillary

Remember, a vote for Jill Stein takes a vote away from Gary Johnson ; )

Where is the 5% coming from?

There are FIVE -5- polls to be averaged, but candidates need to average FIFTEEN, -15- percent, according to the referenced/quoted story.

Problem:
Does Gary Johnson:
1. Be your attack dog for a very weak Hillary? or
2. Take Hillary voters away instead of Trump.

I’m guessing #2 because Johnson is a liberal who claims he’s libertarian, so he probably won’t get a debate slot.

They will lower the standard or tweak the media driven polls to get Gary Johnson up there so that Hiillary can be in the middle with men on either side...its about the OPTICS!
NO Dr Jill...bad optics...sorry that is the way the propaganda arm of the DNC operates ( that being the US MEDIA)

The polls will be rigged to be sure that Trump can’t focus on demolishing Hillary

Just as Sundance predicted, they are working to get Johnson onto the stage so a) it will be “two guys against the little woman” and b) give Johnson credibility (I think he takes a little more from Trump, while Stein takes exclusively from Cankles). It also gives Johnson and Cankles the ability to double team Trump as Perot and Clinton did with H. W. Bush in 1992.

No way, Jose. Hillary does not want Johnson (or Stein, for that matter) on the stage with her at all. Do you think Johnson will go after Trump if he is in the debate? Nope. Clinton is, for all intents and purposes, the incumbent, and that’s who Johnson hopes to take votes away from. Eyeballing polls from over the past week, it looks like when Johnson is included, he takes one to two percentage points more away from Hillary than he does Trump. And she doesn’t need two men on the stage to make herself out as a victim of male bullying; Trump alone will serve that purpose.

"If those five polls were averaged as of today it would be: Clinton: 44%, Trump: 36%, Johnson: 10%, & Stein: 5%"

Even if Johnson's 10% includes some "shy" Trump voters, I can't see it increasing to 15% on an average of 5 polls. (What could Trump possibly do that would make any of his supporters likely to admit it than they are now?)

Disagree. Did you not see the Bush/Clinton/Perot debate?

Disagree. Did you not see the Bush/Clinton/Perot debate?

I did, indeed, see all of their debates. And I believe that while he mostly tried to present his own case, on balance Perot attacked Bush more than he attacked Clinton. That's because Bush was the incumbent and had to defend his record. In this race, Clinton is effectively the incumbent and has to defend both her record and Obama's. Therefore, Johnson is more likely to go after her than Trump because that's who he can steal some votes from.

Also, it was Bush looking at his watch in the second debate that did him in more than anything. I remember seeing it live and thinking there's no way he can recover from the gaffe, and he won't even know it until after the thing is over and his advisors tell him what all of the country just saw on their TV sets.
