U.S. allies unite to block Obama's nuclear 'legacy'
Washington Post ^ | August 14, 2016 | Josh Rogin

President Obama’s last-minute drive for a foreign-policy legacy is making U.S. allies nervous about their own security. Several allied governments have lobbied the administration not to change U.S. nuclear-weapons policy by promising never to be the first to use them in a conflict.

The governments of Japan, South Korea, France and Britain have all privately communicated their concerns about a potential declaration by President Obama of a “no first use” nuclear-weapons policy for the United States. U.S. allies have various reasons for objecting to what would be a landmark change in America’s nuclear posture, but they are all against it, according to U.S. officials, foreign diplomats and nuclear experts.

Japan, in particular, believes that if Obama declares a “no first use” policy, deterrence against countries such as North Korea will suffer and the risks of conflict will rise. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe personally conveyed that message recently to Adm. Harry Harris Jr., the head of U.S. Pacific Command, according to two government officials.

U.S. allies in Europe have a separate, additional concern. They don’t want any daylight between their nuclear policies and those of the United States, especially since Britain, France and the United States all are permanent members of the U.N. Security Council. In the case of an emergency, those differences could cause real coordination problems.

“It’s my understanding that the defense ministries of many of our allied nations have lobbied the White House against changing this doctrine, and there’s been particularly strong opposition from the U.K., France, Japan and South Korea,” said Joe Cirincione, president of the Ploughshares Fund , an anti-proliferation advocacy group that supports the policy change. “We have an interest in creating an international norm that no one should use nuclear weapons first. The allies lobbying against it are nervous nellies.”

Why should we embolden North Korea and other aggressors in this way? How much more damage will this fool do in his quest for a "legacy"?

Because, you silly goose, ObaMao doesn't represent American interests. He's a world citizen who just happens to rule here.

"We have an interest in creating an international norm that no one should use nuclear weapons first. The allies lobbying against it are nervous nellies"

What a moron he is! The allies against this policy have a everything at stake (especially Japan and South Korea), while the DC based libtard who is insulting them is merely concerned with his pantywaist peacenik words.

The supposed "norm" he wants to create would never be respected in moral terms by the dangerous potential adversaries which matter. Like all libtards, this guy wants to tie the hands of the "GOOD GUYS" while reducing actual deterrence against the BAD GUYS who will in no way be limited by the "no first use" policy.

The ABM treaty allowed each country to decide where to place its anti-ballistic missile defense. The US put our ABMs around our missile fields. Moscow put theirs around ... Moscow.

This belies the Russian ‘promise’ of never being the first to use ICBMs. There was no need to protect Russian missile silos from an American strike because the missiles will have been already launched by Moscow, in a first strike. They chose to brace for a counter-strike, protecting the Kremlin.

a potential declaration by President Obama of a “no first use” nuclear-weapons policy for the United States.

Obama needs to STFU and stop trying to commit the US to anything during his final months. But, of course he want since his intent is to damage and hamstring the US as much as possible into the future.

Don’t think that will deter Obama for a second.

Every President since Ike, Democrat and Republican, has adhered to this policy of not renouncing the first use option. But to Obama, it’s just something else he can destroy.

He will make sure our nukes are not in working order before he leaves office. There is a link to the US nuke agency. It has a mission statement right on front page....to dismantle all our nukes. Agency was created under Bush W. 2nd term.

Obama legacy=Total destruction of America. It will be on fire is his legacy. Sharia controlled at some point if she wins.

The US policy should be (and hopefully will be under Trump):

If you play nice and we’ll all be friends...If you act nasty, we’ll blow your azz away in a heartbeat....

We are informed by the media that conservatives don’t have the mental capacity that liberals have. However, liberals have never grasped the simple concept of DETERRENCE.

Obama will do it as much as he can in the upcoming days before the change in government to weaken our country.

Can Anyone name one thing that Obama has done that is pro American, other than getting Bin Laden? I cannot think of anything he is done to advance the American interest.

**
I predict it will only accelerate greatly in the final 5 months and take us to scary places we never even thought of.

So glad I have my faith to sustain me.
