BRASILIA, Brazil - The United States was eliminated by Sweden in Olympic women's soccer quarterfinal after a penalty shoot-out Friday.
The U.S. team, which is the reigning World Cup champions, had been favored to get to the gold medal showdown -- but are instead out in the round of 8.
The Friday match was a stunning loss for the U.S. team, which has played in the final every year since women's soccer became an Olympic sport in 1996, winning gold four times.

Soccer is a lot like basketball. It’s the same play 50 times per game. At what point have you seen it all? Three games? One?
The US header goal, I guess that could be argued as a pull-down by the US. But the Swedish goal? No way that was even close to offsides, but I guess the ref got confused because a US player basically passed it to the Swedish player.
Come on, be a sport for title 9.
Sweden should have won it before the PKs, worst offside call, ever.

If only we paid them just a little more...but seriously, tough loss. Bad officiating is part of the game. Why is soccer in the Olympics anyway? For that matter why does every single game or sport have to be made into an Olympic sport (except baseball and softball).
