Incoming capability gap: Canada’s last destroyer leaves service in early 2017
Ottawa Citizen ^ | August 11, 2016 | David Pugliese

OTTAWA — Canada’s last destroyer will be taken out of service in the spring, leaving the country’s navy reliant on allies for longer-range air defence for at least the next seven years.

HMCS Athabaskan, and similar destroyers, provided command and control capabilities over the years for the Royal Canadian Navy as well as what was called area air defence.

But Athabaskan, Canada’s last destroyer, will be taken out of service within the next year, most likely in the spring, Vice-Admiral Ron Lloyd, the new commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, told Postmedia Wednesday.

Canada’s warships still have the capability to protect themselves from direct, incoming air threats but will have to rely mainly on U.S. ships to deal with missiles and aircraft at longer ranges.

“We won’t be able to fill that long-range air defence gap,” Lloyd said. “You would be looking at your U.S. long-range air defence platforms for that coalition support as we go forward.”

The RCN won’t have that air defence capability back until about 2024 when the first of the new Canadian Surface Combatants is expected to be in the water.

Why do they need a Navy when they can depend on the US to defend them 100%.

Canada’s once significant “Navy” now reduced to a coast guard.... just another example of why Trump is so right that most NATO members are not pulling their weight!!

The “2%” of GDP that NATO members are supposed to devote to defense spending (only 5 members, one of which is the USA, actually do so) would provide a fairly minimal NATO force, since the personnel “overhead” in NATO countries is so high.

All these 50 RINO so-called “national security experts” are so mad at Trump for challenging the current vitality and adequacy of NATO, but it is the disastrous course of the socialist libs that has brought NATO to this pass.

Trump is simply demanding that everyone recognize the reality, that NATO is on an unsustainable course and the USA has been bearing unreasonable burdens for far too long.

I remember when the bombing campaign in Libya started up, and it was revealed that other NATO members could not even operate in the campaign without US support and logistics. NATO is a dishonest shell game, and Trump is exposing its current status.

Well Canada claims to want an ocean going navy, and they claim to be respectable members of NATO, contributing to the mutual defense of the entire NATO alliance.

“but will have to rely mainly on U.S. ships to deal with missiles and aircraft at longer ranges.”

Trump is right...make them pay if they want our protection....why should the American taxpayer foot the bill so that Canada can provide cradle to grave social services to their citizens, while our seniors struggle to pay for prescription drugs...it’s wrong and Trump needs to call them out.

Unfortunately, they probably won’t even think about building one as long as Baby Trudeau is Prime Minister.

“This is what Trump is talking about....our “allies” need to start paying their “fair share” of defense to borrow a dim talking point.”

Yes, the deadbeats are not all in Europe.

Trump is right, most NATO countries are parasites, and if they won't hold up their end it is time to re-consider the entire alliance. Nowadays, most NATO countries can't or won't maintain a serious force capable of supporting the alliance:

Have they been listening to Trump about paying their own way?

Trump has been very clear on that so I don't see NATO surviving much into his first term.

Yes they have, and that is why they are so anxious to have Hillary win.

As a Canadian, it hurts to read the comments on this thread. And it hurts all the more because all the comments are true.

The only way this will change is via "tough love" from an ass-kicker like Trump. The carrot will never work, it is time for the stick.

I think Michigan could take them.

There are a bunch of Bad A$$e$ that live in Detroit.

However, other than Shania Twain what would they gain?

If, we owned the oil sands in Alberta, the Sierra Club would have it shut down within a week.

We certainly do not want to deal with the French Quebecers.

Is that “green” or “gray-green” or something else ?

Looks like they'll be depending on USN "haze gray" shortly.

That rust bucket was launched in 1970. 46 years old.

Puts things in perspective. When I reported aboard for duty in November of 1961 my ship had just hit 21 years of service, but with the new ones coming into the fleet we considered her old. But I heard they kept her going into the 1980s.

Now that Pierre’s son is PM perhaps the New York Nation Guard should attack Ottawa and make Canada our 51st State. Surrender would be announced in about 24 hours.

We have to kick Obammy’s arse out of the White Hut first and make damned certain that the criminal Hillary hasn’t been elected by American idiot voters.
