AP: Paul Ryan wins primary
WISN-TV ^ | 8/9/2016 | Associated Press

House Speaker Paul Ryan wins primary, defeats longshot GOP challenger praised by Donald Trump.

Ryan was being challenged by Paul Nehlen.

Nehlen had been courting Trump supporters and won praise from the Republican presidential nominee last week. But Trump endorsed Ryan days later.

Ryan had largely ignored Nehlen in what had been a sleepy primary before Trump thanked Nehlen on Twitter for his comments defending Trump. Nehlen won the backing of some prominent conservative figures, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, but it wasn't enough to overcome Ryan's popularity in his southeastern Wisconsin district.

Ryan was first elected in 1998 and this is his first re-election win since becoming speaker last fall.

Commentary Magazine said Ryan threw Huelskamp off the Ag Committee.

I assumed that was reliable.

Ryan has now set himself up for running for the presidency in four years no matter who's elected in November.

By the way, I'll bet the Wisconsin cheese-for-brains voters will elect Hillary and she will get the state's 10 electoral votes.

Ryan will have zot influence for the GOP in the general election.

If Trump wins, Trump will have to rely on Ryan to get his agenda passed. Ryan will owe Trump nothing. Both will have to compromise and if Trump tries to mess with Ryan, Ryan won't move anything Trump wants. That's the way the game is played.

I recall when Carter was president. Carter was a pure, holier than thou kind of guy. Carter was very publicly "Do it my way or else" kind of guy.

Well, his own party in Congress hated Carter and sabotaged his every move. Carter was an unqualified failure as a president.

As one Democratic Congressman said at the time (I forget who it was), "I was here before Carter and I will be here after Carter." That about sums it up.

Trump is entering a world of compromise. That is the reality. Ronald Reagan wasn't bothered by compromise. He often said that it's OK if he doesn't get everything because he will come back the next time and get just a little bit more.

Do you think we got to where we are today overnight. It has been an 80 year journey for the democrats. They are patient and play the game. They are happy to get just a little bit each time and over decades they have gotten practically everything.

It won't be reversed in 4 years or 8 years. But we can start.

Conservatives have an obligation to provide the same level of support he is giving our presidential nominee, and stay home in November.

In 2014, he beat his democratic challenger 66 to 33%.

So the DemocRAT house candidate would need about an additional 17% of the vote to win.

Assuming that the 66% are all republican, then (17/66) x 100 = 26% is the percent of republican voters who need to flip their vote to the D side, in order to take down Ryan.

Ryan defeated Nehlen 85% to 15%. So right there you have 15%. The Rat would have to flip just another 10% of the pubbie vote to defeat Ryan in November.

So defeating Ryan in November is not entirely out of the question.

You anticipate losing the house, or commenting on Paul Ryan? Or both?

Ryan has been a huge disappointment, but I’m not at all surprised - he was hand picked by Boehner.

“Ryan is toast. Nehlen’s supporters will cross over to vote for the Democrat. Having Paul Rino is the same thing as having a Democrat anyway.”

You are obviously mathematically challenged. Nehlen got 15% of the vote in a strongly GOP district. If every one of that 15% vote Dim it will make no difference...

“The Rat would have to flip just another 10% of the pubbie vote to defeat Ryan in November.”

Geez some here can't count and others can't think logically

Why in the world would 26% of the 85% of the GOP voters in the district would change their vote to Dim come November? This is a Congressional District seat only voters in the District can vote for or against Ryan

Trump endorsed Ryan, and thereby lost nothing.

Had he endorsed his opposition, and lost, the media would also claim that Trump was being rejected.

Exactly my thinking. Trump was one step ahead.

Progressives from both parties supported Ryan. Democrats + Republicans = the Progressive Party...and it’s huge.

I tried to tell you Ryan was safe.. He got 85% of the vote folks, like it or not he was never in any danger in this primary, it was grand overreaching to think because Trump won the national nod, that anti establishment sentiment would rule the day in Ryan’s congressional district.

Ryan is the player on the field that Trump will have to deal with in the house, thinking he was going to wind up like Cantor was self dillusional.

Now sour grapes on a guy who is going to be the speaker for the foreseeable future doesn’t change or help. He’s the player that has to be dealt with and so, we will see how he is dealt with and what he does.

Don’t apply logic these take out Ryan folks have been running on pure emotion this entire cycle they aren’t going to listen to reason now.

Ryan is about as safe as you can get for re election, and will win it handily in the fall.

I don’t like every stand or step he’s taken but there was zero chance he was going to lose his primary and there is zero chance he will lose his reelection.
