You’re right, the price collapse was huge, but nationalizing everything a few years earlier was also huge. They ran off every oil company and every supplier that was helping them pay for the welfare and put the welfare people in charge. Brilliant. Their revenues were falling before the price collapse, and expenses were rising. The perfect storm.

They did not collapse because they are not socialists. It should be noted that Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world.

The oil price is partially true but in fact VZ produces a high sulphur content oil that is difficult to refine and nobody wants.
