A young man was killed by a shotgun blast near a Raleigh home Sunday morning and the homeowner where the shooting happened has been charged with murder, Raleigh police said.

[SNIP] During a 911 call at 12:57 a.m., the caller said that he fired a shot while several people were outside his home and they had guns.

“We have a house.. we have a lot of people outside of our house yelling and shouting obscenities. I yelled at them ‘please leave the premises.’ They were showing firearms, so I fired a warning shot and we got someone that got hit,” the 911 caller said.

“I don’t know if they are shot, I fired my warning shot like I am supposed to by law. They do have firearms and I am trying to protect myself and family,” the 911 caller said. “I don’t know who they are…There is a park right down the road.”

“Please send PD! …(inaudible) males outside my (inaudible) house with firearms.. Please send PD!” the 911 caller said and the call then ended.

About 7 minutes before that call about the shooting, another caller who claimed he was with the neighborhood watch complained about people on Singleleaf, requested police and said he was going to “secure the neighborhood.”

Yep, that’s our brilliant Uncle Joe’s advice.

The notion of a "warning shot" is likely a tale from a bygone era.
The phrase itself illustrates that one is *not* in a life-and-death situation.
One should not shoot until one HAS to shoot.

This dude's mouth is buying him some real trouble.

Yep. Blatant disregard for Tuco's Rule.

He has not been empowered to "secure the neighborhood". Did he not learn from the George Zimmmerman case?

There were six different calls to police on these hoodlums. One was the call about securing the neighborhood, and another was the call about a warning shot hitting someone, and there were four others that just reported what was going on. They may not have been the same caller, they may have been. It hasn't been confirmed either way.

...he declared he was heading out to secure the neighborhood which would not be his job and reinforces that he wasn’t in direct danger. He should face charges, then we’ll see how it plays out.

How far we have fallen as a culture. You got an armed group of thugs hanging around the neighborhood but it's not any man's "job" to make the place secure. You're supposed to cower in your house, waiting for that government organization to come and "save" you - you know, that organization that has no legal obligation to protect you and, in this case, hadn't responded in well over 7 minutes to the 911 call.

Sorry but you’re bassackwards. Vigilante-ism is a hole we crawled out of, that’s not falling as a society that’s ELEVATING. Some random jackass wandering out with a shotgun doesn’t improve a situation, as shown here. His “warning shot” killed someone purely because he’s a moron. Nobody said anything about cowering, that’s your stupid chest thumping BS. His correct answer was to be on guard and be smart, if they entered or directly threatened his property defend it, but until such point leave the situation alone. There was no possible way for him to make the situation better. He’s lucky in a way, normally wandering out into a situation where you’re outnumbered and outgunned and deliberately escalating it gets you killed, he “just” got somebody else killed and now is free to contemplate all the various stupid things he did that led to that.

Yeah sure, stupid chest thumping, as opposed to your pathetic boot-licking. Regardless of whether this particular guy was an idiot or not, the principle is the same. If an armed group of thugs is hanging out in your neighborhood, they are a threat, whether they actively point guns at you or not. Protecting yourself and your neighbors should not require you to have to wait until someone actually dies, or gets raped or beaten. My perspective is that the guy had the right idea, wrong execution. Your perspective seems to be that the guy had the wrong idea - that he isn’t supposed to see an armed group of thugs as a threat because the government hasn’t authorized him to. That is pathetic and I am guessing you have no sympathy for his plight because you have never been in such a circumstance. Must be nice to be so comfy all the time.

It is chest thumping, and I’m not licking anything. Protecting yourself does NOT include walking into a dumb situation and drawing attention and fire. The smart move is to arm up, call the cops, and keep an eye on the situation prepared to defend yourself if necessary. The cops have a few basic advantage: body armor, backup, and a much higher chance of not going to jail if they kill somebody. It’s not my perspective he DID have the wrong idea. He gave up two big things when he walked out there: cover and surprise. I didn’t say he shouldn’t see them as a threat, I said he didn’t correctly respond to it. He made the wrong tactical decision. I have no sympathy for anybody that makes their own situation worse. I’ve been in bad situations, and made the right call, and didn’t draw fire, and didn’t fire any warning shots, and didn’t give up the advantages I had in some stupid quest to prove how manly I am. I did my job, the pros did their job, situation ended safely. The idiot did NOT do his job, somebody died because of it.

> The idiot did NOT do his job, somebody died because of it.

A criminal died for it. Are you crying over a criminal?

The right to defend one’s own and your property is the most basic rights we have. Said day when people on FR drink the leftist cool aid and repeat their propaganda.

People are people. And he wasn’t defending his own property. He left his property to escalate the situation, that ain’t defense. Sad day when people think just because the guy was supposedly a criminal that means you can just shoot them.

Well, the Navy and the Coast Guard fire warning shots. ;-D

Perhaps the homeowner should have used a deck gun.

There are no reports seen that these were indeed armed criminals.
They might have simply been loud-mouthed drunk kids acting like loud-mouthed drunk kids.

The homeowner made LOTS of mistakes...all in a row.
He should have sat tight, behind cover, with the tactical advantage, and eyes on the situation to report to police.

Yup. When things get real people gotta remember a few rules. It’s not an action movie, they aren’t action heroes, know what you’re job is and don’t do more. He should have defended his own home, let his neighbors defend their, and let the cops defend the street.

The “secure the neighborhood” 911 call was not the man who shot the victim

If you read the article closely (it was written poorly) you will see that that call was made by a different 911 caller. Not the shooter.
