My grandparents had one, small rectangular banner about the size of 2-3 washcloths with a red & blue border and white background for the gold star.

They even had an organization back in those days called Gold Star Mothers. It was not just a mutual support group, but they wrote cards and put together care packages for other people in the service.

They didn't use it as a club to promote their personal politics and business interests.
