Fueled by Small Donations, Donald Trump Makes Up Major Financial Ground
The New York Times ^ | AUG. 3, 2016 | NICHOLAS CONFESSORE

Donald J. Trump all but erased his enormous fund-raising deficit against Hillary Clinton in the span of just two months, according to figures released by his campaign on Tuesday, converting the passion of his core followers into a flood of small donations on a scale rarely seen in national politics.

Mr. Trump and the Republican National Committee raised $64 million through a joint digital and direct mail effort in July, according to his campaign, the bulk of it from small donations. All told, Mr. Trump and his party brought in $82 million last month, only slightly behind Mrs. Clinton, and ended with an enormous pool of $74 million in cash on hand, suggesting he might now have the resources to compete with Mrs. Clinton in the closing stretch of the campaign.

The figures mark a major achievement in Mr. Trump’s campaign, which until recent months was largely funded by a trickle of hat and T-shirt sales and by Mr. Trump’s wallet. And they suggest Mr. Trump has the potential to be the first Republican nominee whose campaign could be financed chiefly by grass-roots supporters pitching in $10 or $25 apiece, echoing the unprecedented success of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont during the Democratic presidential primary.

Mrs. Clinton has “been doing this for 20 years,” said Steven Mnuchin, a New York investor who serves as Mr. Trump’s finance chairman. “We’ve been doing it for two months.”

Exact figures — including a precise breakdown of total cash raised in small increments by each candidate — will not be available until Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton file their formal monthly reports with the Federal Election Commission this month.

The NeverTrumpers on Twitter were saying, “He’s crowing about a meager, pitiable haul.” Even the NYT is more fair. But, it does make it easy to cull one’s followers/follows.

Can’t be that he brought in this much money.

he’s down 64 points and everybody hates him.

MSM says so.

I’ve donated $100 a few times the last couple of months, particularly when Trump matches.

I’m waiting for the ad onslaught on Crooked Hillary to begin, and I will donate more.

The lying criminal mainstream media is behind Crooked Hillary, just like they were behind Carter in 1980.

Fortunately, the people were behind Reagan and he won in a landslide.

I predict the same outcome on November 8th.

I'm doing $10 auto-donation, plus I do an additional $10 every time Trump is matching, which I then double when the Trump website asks me if I want to double my donation. In addition, every time some macher, such as Meg Whitman, announces that she is going to vote for HRC, I give another $5 to Trump. I know $5 and $10 don't sound like big donations, but when even the NYTimes is acknowledging that small donations are snowballing on Trump's behalf, we're getting someplace, folks!

AOL is headlining a story about Trump possibly dropping out of the race. I’m just wondering if part of this emphasis is to discourage donations, small and big.<P.
Also, at least in the near past, there was no address on his Website or otherwise readily available where to send checks. Not everybody likes to contribute with credit cards over the Internet.

https://secure.donaldjtrump.com/donate-homepage/?amount=150&utm_campaign=djt_website_donate&utm_source=website&utm_medium=web&utm_content=top_nav

Choose donation amount:
$10
$35
$75
$100
$150
$250
$1000
$2700

Make this a monthly recurring donation

apparently no more $50 , but that’s what I chose
and get billed for .

One of the lines from this cycle that makes me smile is Bernie Sanders shouting that his average donation was:

“Twenty-Seven Dollas”

I imaging it’s a larger average amount for Trump. At least it is for me.

I've gotten lots of e-mails from various organizations purporting to be raising money for Trump, but I've only donated directly to his own web site. It's the only one I trust.

I plan to chip in a few bucks on a regular basis between now and November 8th. Trump has certainly shown he knows how to run a budget. In many ways the number of small donations is more significant than the dollar amounts since you can assume that small donors fall into the "likely voter" category.

“...raising money for Trump, but I've only donated directly to his own web site. It's the only one I trust.”

Exactly how I feel. Just got a letter in the mail, from an address in Washington, DC, asking for money for Trump's campaign. Tossed it, yet I donate via Trump's website every time it pops up on facebook or when I get an email from it.

I've been waiting for that news.

I think he's going to finally do what a bunch of Cruzers predicted he would do a year ago, drop out and throw all his support behind Ted Cruz.

LeoWindhorse said: "I’m in for $50/mo auto-donation."

"Bis das, si cito das" is an ancient Latin proverb. It means, "You give twice if you give quickly."

I think the publicity surrounding the success of recent Trump fundraising bears this out. It takes away the negative talking-point that Trump is way behind in fundraising and provides a positive story of the widespread support he is getting.

My approach is to give just as much as I can possibly justify NOW. I will no doubt be able to justify more later.

Just today I received an email promising an autographed copy of Trump's book for a $200 donation. I had planned to buy the book anyway, so I donated. Then when it came time that I only had to press one button to double the donation, I gave in.

My thought process was, "If Hillary wins, this money will mean nothing to me. I will spend far more time and effort trying to save my right to keep and bear arms than the total of all I have ever sent to other candidates."

"It's the Supreme Court, stupid!"

The point of my post is that NOW is the time to give whatever you can NOW. LATER is the time to give whatever else you can give.
