Portland has announced the end of a pilot program that allowed homeless people to sleep on the streets undisturbed by law enforcement, saying it created confusion because some believed it legalized public camping. The so-called 'Safe Sleeping Guidelines' policy will end immediately, but several other pilot programs that also were rolled out in February in the famously liberal City of Roses will continue or even expand, the mayor said.

Another Social Justice Warrior program gone bad. At least give credit to the freaks who run Portlandia admitting the program failed and halted it.

Maybe they should pay them $15 an hour to move somewhere else.

Their reason for ending it is pretty lame. They just can’t admit that they hate the homeless.

I come down to Portland a lot and can only say the homeless problem is the worst it’s ever been.

well of course it legalizes camping. I could unroll my sleeping bag anywhere I liked in Portland and no one could legally disturb me.

I also find it remarkable (here in SF) that building codes are so strict and expensive “for safety” (wiring, plumbing, sanitation) but homeless encampments can just exist, with their potty piles and whatever electrics and standing water and whatever, no one cares.

Our “safety” costs us tremendous sums and hassles, they can just do whatever.

The Willamette Week, the city's alternative weekly, sent a team of reporters to test the policy by pitching tents on the sidewalk in front of [Mayor] Hales' home and the homes of other elected officials.

Hmm...I'm sure this had nothing to do with the cancellation of the program...

My town used to have the reputation for tough cops.

They actively kept motorcycle gangs out of town, by harassing them.

They warned homeless to get out of town, or be driven out in a squad car.

Now we have cops with Masters Degrees, that explain “it is not illegal” to be homeless, and how the ACLU will sue them individually, etc.

Consequently we have a growing homeless problem.

Twenty years ago I noticed the homeless in rich Santa Barbara, and it amused me it was like a “feel good” thing for the students and rich liberals.

At that time, I rested comfortably my town was not so misguided. Guess what, now my town is likewise misguided.

THey do love their homeless people out there, which is a nice thing to do. The problem is that so many of the homeless suffer from underlying mental issues that you can’t expect them to respond how you or I would to their largess.

When you watch someone defecate at the front door of a business when there’s a perfectly good port-a-potty right there, you know that ‘that boy just ain’t right.’

Haters!! Oh, the injustice of this. Help, I am so offended by this that I need a safe place!!! I think I am going to go hide in my barn and weep.

Just don’t send any of these crazy street people to live with me.

Another brilliant Liberal idea bites the dust. But it looked soooooooo good on paper!

If Libs would ever project for unintended consequences, they could save themselves many hours of frustration, many reams of project papers, and save the taxpayers many, many dollars.

Of course, they never consider that last part — saving taxpayers money.

It would have been funny if the whole city camped out downtown one day.

I’ve designated them as “human pigeons.” They are everywhere, always want handouts, defecate anywhere and generally make a nuisance of themselves.

some believed it legalized public camping.

The only difference was "intent."

“Guess what, now my town is likewise misguided.”

As is mine, with predictable consequences: every street corner downtown has homeless beggars (some of them quite aggressive), and even most major intersections in the near suburbs have them. I blame:

1. the misguided “mainstreaming” policy of releasing the mentally ill into the general public with no supervised, continuing treatment.

2. court decisions which make public loitering and overnight camping a constitutional right.

3. the Bush-Obama economy, which includes unrestricted immigration, resulting in the displacement of low-skilled native-born workers, and increasing regulations designed to eliminate low-wage employment.

-

The same in Honolulu.

They head for the airport at night——sleep on benches and use the restrooms. Nice, huh?

Liberals disclose one thing in these failures. Their utter belief in the right to dictate human behavior.

Allowing homeless to sleep in the streets one year. Marching the middle class into the fields to grow crops the next. There is no change in motivation. There is only a difference in circumstance.

Land use regulations, building regulations, HOAs and upsizing covenants and regulations got the riff-raff of the former private sector out of the now gentrified neighborhoods of those with incomes derived from government (”conservatives” of bipartisan socialist fascism, choosers of candidates for all political parties). Why complain about the consequences? Keep the homeless nearby and in sight, so their suffering can be enjoyed.

[Little irony and sarcasm there. Can’t wait for the defaults.]

This is an effective tactic.
We had a problem with ear splitting rap music in my neighborhood for awhile, until our neighborhood coalition camped out in the absentee landlord’s upscale neighborhood —and cranked up our own boom boxes.

We had signs and put out a press release that got us on the 6 o’clock news. The problem tenants were soon evicted.

Yeah, but they only want to dictate to the productive people.
Total screw ups can do anything they like.
