Republican candidate Donald Trump has called Democratic rival Hillary Clinton "the devil", in the face of continuing fire from within his own party.

Speaking at a rally in a high school gym in Pennsylvania, Mr Trump attacked Bernie Sanders for capitulating to Mrs Clinton in the Democratic race.

"He made a deal with the devil," the tycoon said. "She's the devil."

Not to be Captain Obvious, but the context isn't literal:

'When you "make a deal with the devil", you ally yourself with a person of ill repute to accomplish what you want.

The idea here is that you compromise your principles in a way that may turn out to be extremely harmful to you.

A hypothetical example of this might be borrowing money from a criminal to start a business because you believe there is no other way to get the money. Yes, you might start your business and do well, but the choice of borrowing from the criminal could return to "haunt" you later.

A real-world example would be allying with a totalitarian country in war, only to be exploited or destroyed by that ally in the end.'
