Property taxes jump, and jaws drop ( Chicago )
Crain's Chicago Business ^ | July 28, 2016 | Dennis Rodkin

The property tax bill on Jeff and Roberta Price's Lincoln Park home was about $400 in 1977, the first year they lived there. It's been going up ever since but rarely with the jolt of this year's 63 percent increase.

The increase, from $8,652 to $14,104, has the couple re-considering their plan to retire in the Kenmore Avenue home, where they raised their kids. They're looking at homes in Indiana "as a backup plan" for the time when Roberta retires in a few years, said Jeff, who is already retired.

"We have lived in our home for almost 39 years with the hope that we could remain here in our golden years," Jeff Price said. The increase in their tax bill amounts to about $454 a month, an amount that they can squeak out, he said, but he's aware that for homeowners who struggle financially, it won't be easy.

"I don't know how anyone can plan their life with these unconscionable increases," Price said.

And the property taxes that I pay for my home in Indiana are $1800. That is why it is their back up plan.

Here in Alabama I pay $575 a YEAR for 15 yr old 2000 Sq Ft 4 Bed/3bath with 2 car garage.

They are paying DOUBLE what I pay a year PER MONTH!

We here in FL have a steady influx of NYC, NJ and PA retirees that flee their high tax homelands and come here for the low taxes and cost of living and beautiful weather.

Unfortunately, they also bring their voting patterns with them. They do not understand that their vote is what created the mess they are fleeing. To them, their vote is their chance to change here to there..................

This is *ALL* about people in government voting themselves unsustainable retirement packages for lazy government-worker bums.

Get a government job when you’re 18 and retire when you’re 48.

Houses aren't cheap in good old Lincoln Park. And you don't get much for your money. Why would anyone want to live there?

One thing CA got right was Prop 13. I’m surprised the dims haven’t been able to get rid of it yet. Though they have found some work arounds, ie special assessments.

We escaped to E TN and pay $1000 yr for a 2300 sf 4/4. Life is much better here.

My sister lived in Chicago and had to move to Indiana.

We are looking to retire in the next few years, and move somewhere else. I told my husband that I DO NOT want to pay $1,000/month in property taxes. So, there are several places we won’t be going. California is one of the states we cannot consider, even though we lived there for 20 years and loved the activities we were able to enjoy. And we would NEVER consider Chicago again.

The ONLY DAMNED good thing in CA. is prop 13, property taxes are frozen to the tax you pay when you purchase the home! However these bastards are ALWAYS trying to overturn the law!!!

Illinois and Chicago are dying quickly. The public unions are taking down the state and the city. There are lots of million dollar homes sitting on the market in Illinois. The rich are buying small condos or renting downtown apartments so they can work there and pay taxes in Indiana or Wisconsin.

Unfortunately, they also bring their voting patterns with them.

That is why there should be a 5 or 10 year moratorium on voting for new state residents.

And the bad news is that after they vote with their feet they keep voting for the same crap they did in the place they left.

The good news is that people can vote with their feet.

NO! THAT'S VERY BAD NEWS! THEY JUST GO SOMEWHERE ELSE AND BRING THEIR STUPID IDEAS WITH THEM WHILE ACTING LIKE A VICTIM!

Hell, a lot of them vote IN TWO (or more) STATES!
They get absentee ballots from their old states and vote here in our state too! Which is illegal, of course....................

The Russians were responsible for this, you know.

The Russians couldn't have done it without Trump's help though.

[Illinois and Chicago are dying quickly.]

This is the fruit of passing every abominable law there is. Illinois has cursed itself with its legislation.

Voter fraud = mandatory FIVE YEARS in federal prison. I’ll be gracious and allow the sentence to be served in one of those ‘country club’ prisons.

Even the states’ one year residency requirements before voting or collecting welfare were held to be too onerous by the fed courts in the 1960s. This has led to far more chaos and degeneracy than is generally understood.

I could be wrong, as my wife likes to point out I often am, but I believe in Michigan it is Proposal A.
