I don't think it was deliberate in the Travon Martin case, but the more black (criminal) kids got shot, the more this strategy crystalized. For the social justice warriors, losing is good. It is good because it adds fuel to the fire that the system is corrupt and out to get blacks. Since every loss throws gasoline onto the fire, might as well go big and lose big.
