Paul Simon took to the Democratic National Convention stage last night to perform his hit "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

A lot of fans were quick to point out that the singer's performance was, well, troubled.

Éponine15191 @Eponine15191 So I've just caught up with the footage of Paul Simon at the DNC yesterday singing Bridge Over TW, I'm so sad for him. He looks sick. #sad 5:26 AM - 26 Jul 2016

Public_Interest @Public_Interest Paul Simon fan here: Paul Simon was awful tonight. 10:05 PM - 25 Jul 2016

Mr. Cummings @APGOPOHHS I've always loved Paul Simon but that was more awful than a karaoke version of Bridge Over Troubled Water. 9:30 PM - 25 Jul 2016

Regina Ferguson @regina_ferguson Paul Simon singing Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water at the DNC was painful. Is the man ill? Off key with no emotion.

Some, however, defended Simon, noting his age.

Paul Waldman @paulwaldman1 Hey everybody, cut Paul Simon some slack on not hitting the high notes. The man's 74 years old! Your voice should be as good at that age. 9:46 PM - 25 Jul 2016

After watching the performance, I’d blame the piano player who made a lot of mistakes.

We must have been at the same show. While I enjoyed the show, I know that he was quite abusive to the crew (my son was doing the audio) and to his own son as well. Just a nasty piece of work according to my son.

I always knew he never had what it takes to make it on his own.

Tom and Jerry performed at my university a few years before I got there. Always liked Hey Schoolgirl, but I'm over 60 now and am afraid of being labeled a letch if anyone were to see me enjoying it. : )

Is Hillary the silver girl in BOTW?

If so, she's the German Silver girl

You should read this Garfunkel interview from a year ago.

“It was very strange. Nothing I would have done. I want to open up about this. I don’t want to say any anti Paul Simon things, but it seems very perverse to not enjoy the glory and walk away from it instead. Crazy. What I would have done is take a rest from Paul, because he was getting on my nerves. The jokes had run dry.

Paul Simon once said that it upset him that audiences thought Garfunkel had written his masterpiece, the song Bridge Over Troubled Water – because Garfunkel sang it as a solo, with piano accompaniment.

“I saw that quote, too. But how many songs did I sing upfront and have a real tour de force of vocal? Does he resent that I had that one? I find that ungenerous.”

Geriatric Paul Simon bungling and croaking through one of his famous “60s” generation songs from 50 years ago is a perfect metaphor for Hillary Clinton’s presidential candidacy.

No it isn't. Bridge was stunningly beautiful when released in 1970. Hillary was an unshaven stinking little hairy commie shrew.

Simon's song was to his wife, who he teasingly called silver girl because at 30 she started getting some silver gray hairs (in her case, not under her arms). It's a beautiful soaring epic song even today. To compare it to a woman who is even uglier inside than outside is an undeserved insult.

Mr. S at 80.

Not what he was in his late 30s and his 40s, his pinnacle, THE pinnacle, but...Not...too...shabby.

He was performing rarely in the year(s) before this one, and this was one of his very last if not his last. This was his last year performing; he retired fully. It was 1995. I think he did maybe one concert in 1994.

What song exactly was the piano player playing?

How to butcher a truly iconic song and I don’t care that you wrote it or not. You should be arrested for murder along with your piano player.

“Art Garfunkel’s vocal chords were damaged when he choked on a piece of lobster at The Palm restaurant in NYC a few years ago.”

That’s a shame.

“I saw him perform accompanied by a great guitar player last year at a small theatre.”

Sounds like a good time. All these years, and I never did see either of them in person.
