Paul Simon took to the Democratic National Convention stage last night to perform his hit "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

A lot of fans were quick to point out that the singer's performance was, well, troubled.

Éponine15191 @Eponine15191 So I've just caught up with the footage of Paul Simon at the DNC yesterday singing Bridge Over TW, I'm so sad for him. He looks sick. #sad 5:26 AM - 26 Jul 2016

Public_Interest @Public_Interest Paul Simon fan here: Paul Simon was awful tonight. 10:05 PM - 25 Jul 2016

Mr. Cummings @APGOPOHHS I've always loved Paul Simon but that was more awful than a karaoke version of Bridge Over Troubled Water. 9:30 PM - 25 Jul 2016

Regina Ferguson @regina_ferguson Paul Simon singing Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water at the DNC was painful. Is the man ill? Off key with no emotion.

Some, however, defended Simon, noting his age.

Paul Waldman @paulwaldman1 Hey everybody, cut Paul Simon some slack on not hitting the high notes. The man's 74 years old! Your voice should be as good at that age. 9:46 PM - 25 Jul 2016

A metaphor for today's Democratic Party.

Yeah: old, past it, washed up, decrepit, senescent, and convinced that it's still the 70's and he's still relevant.

I saw Grappelli perform right around the same time (mid-late 80s). I agree- he was solid.

I saw Dizzy Gillespie perform a few years before he died. He was good, but didn’t have the stamina of his younger days. He performed a set of normal length.

Simon could barely get through one song.

I wonder if Simon wanted to perform “America” but was refused? The song was used in ads by Bernie at the permission of the artists.

BB King was the same... sold plenty of tickets but got to the point where he just sat on stage and barely played at all.

it was painful to watch.

Like Willie Mays playing for the Mets. Or Ali fighting Leon Spinks.

Simon sounded fine, given his age. Bridge ain’t his song at least as far as singing goes. Never was, even though he wrote it. Garfunkel it the soaring notes we remember. Last night Paul Simon sang it like Paul Simon.

I don’t know if Art Garfunkel was invited to join Paul Simon onstage last night or not. Garfunkel has expressed disappointment at Simon singing “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in concerts without him. Simon wrote the song, but Garfunkel sang it solo on the original record, and it is kind a signature song for Garfunkel, his trademark, so for someone else to sing it kind of sucks for Garfunkel.

Garfunkel is also on record for being a big Bernie Sanders fan. And remember the both allowed Sanders to use the original Simon & Garfunkel recording of the song America in a campaign ad.

I wonder how Art Garfunkel feels about the lying criminal and the DNC rigging the primaries and basically stealing the nomination from Bernie Sanders and his millions of supporters? I can’t imagine he’s happy about that.

Paul Simon: The short, Jewish Stevie Wonder; part of The Reliables.
Mr. Simon, next time you want that song performed in public, I recommend that you swallow your pride and have your agent call Art Garfunkle’s agent. That song (Bridge over T.W.) is beautiful, but too much for your voice in it’s present condition.
P.S. Thanks so much for El Condor Pasa 1970. See, I haven’t forgotten, after all these years!

All over the stage and the front-row crowd? Wow! Demwits put up with more than I ever would.

(Besides, it was Art's song to sing anyway; Paul's going senile but aren't we all.)

“That’s Garfunkel’s role.”

Last time I saw Art on video he seemed to be losing his voice.

...time and chance happeneth to them all.

This performance might make Streisend and Cher want to do more farewell tours.

I agree; there are few songs more beta than “You Can Call Me Al”, “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” and “Still Crazy After All These Years”.

After all the years, I’ve decided that Graceland is the only one of Paul Simon’s albums worth listening to again.

(Bridge Over Troubled Water and Hey Jude were bathroom break songs for us back then. And hope the record didn’t stick.)

“Moe appropriate would be AC/DC “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.”

Oh, what a great bit of sabotage that would be.

Maybe DJT’s Republican Party will have the stones for that.

Imagine, Rotten Cankles walks out on the stage, and suddenly...

I have to say that “Only Living Boy New York” is also a great song.

“So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright” is musically quite good, but is actually a spiteful little mockery of Art Garfunkel (who Simon had sing the song).

Art Garfunkel did not write “Bridge over Troubled Water” but he has always acted like he owns it.

I have seen Garfunkel in many interviews over the years, including recent ones. He has got to be one of the most conceited performers I have ever seen or heard. He is so stuck on myself but I find it difficult to listen to him anymore.

As for Paul Simon, he has always had a soft voice anyway, so singing at 74 would make him sound even weaker.

I enjoy a lot of his music, but this song was never his forte. If you don’t believe me, ask Art Garfunkel, he will tell you.

cut Paul Simon some slack on not hitting the high notes. The man's 74 years old!

In just about a week, on August, 3rd Tony Bennett will be 90 and is still singing very well.
