Cleveland Bounce: Donald Trump Surges to 44 Percent, With Hillary Clinton at 40 Percent

Donald Trump, the GOP nominee for president, vaulted to a four point lead over Hillary Clinton just prior to the Democratic National Convention this week in Philadelphia, according to a Morning Consult poll of 2,502 registered voters.

Trump now leads Clinton 44 percent to 40 percent, says the poll, which was conducted from July 22 through July 24. It has an error margin of 2 percent.

The New York City developer’s lead is a sizable swing from the past week, when Clinton was clinging to a 2-point lead, wrote Kyle Dropp, Morning Consult’s executive director of polling, and Cameron Easley, the firm’s managing editor.

“Trump has been on a positive trend since the Department of Justice determined that there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute Clinton for her use of a private email server for official business while serving in the Obama administration,” Dopp and Easley said. “The Republican National Convention came in for criticism from much of the major media outlets … [but the] new Morning Consult survey indicates the typical post-convention bump that a party tends to receive following their gathering.”

I would bet that the bounce would be much bigger if the media had taken a neutral position during the convention, instead of obsessing about Malania Trump’s speech for 3 days, and highlighting the Cruz situation. I also suspect that the bounce is at least a few points higher than the polls show, because some people aren’t willing to say that they will vote for him.

Yup. No surprise here.

I'm expecting that H->illary will get the same bump after the dim convention.

DJT supporters can't get complacent. Figure that 90% of the media will be actively reporting against him, or at least failing to report positive Trump-related news. That's an enormous hurdle to overcome.

I think the polls are rigged for the most part and Trump is further ahead than indicated. What I don’t get is why Hillary can have even 25% support at this point. People know that she is dishonest and they know she uses her position to take bribe money and sell her influence. It is sad to see that so many are suckers for the media.

Yup...I’m sure Hillary will be up by 5 or more points at the end of their freak-show convention as well.

But … but … but … the experts told us that he had a ceiling that he could not pass. They are experts. They can’t be wrong, can they?

Every candidate has a ceiling. It just so happens that Hillary's is lower than Trump's. After she loses, she will blame the "glass ceiling".

I accidentally listened to Good Morning America this morning (only 20 seconds before barfing) only to be informed that the 1st Wookie is speaking today and is the most loved political figure in the country.

We ain’t got a chance!

"When you factor in hidden support, actually probably more like a 15-20% Trump lead at this point .."

Exactly, I think there is a groundswell of secret support coming for Trump in Nov. Praying for a historical landslide!

CNN is reporting a 6 point Trump convention bounce and other networks reporting up to a 9 point bounce. The bounce is still developing as we speak. Its only a few days since our convention ended and two of those days were on a weekend.

Historically the average “bounce” after a convention is 1%.

I like it, but I can’t stand the overuse of the word “surge” and variations of the word “surge.”

“Is it too early in the day for popcorn!”

i think the rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t have popcorn before 5:00pm or otherwise you might be a popcornaholic.

A lot of people here speak of popcorn but I'm not sure that is the healthiest snack. It can also make a mess.

I think what we should do is eat raw Brussels sprouts. Now what I do is chop them up and put them in a bowl. That is, you cut off the end, slice in half and let the outer leaves fall off (you don't want to eat those). They are quite good when eaten raw. However, if you must roast them, make sure you use olive oil, pepper, bacon bits and just a little kosher salt. Let them brown on the outside.

Unfortunately, I’m one of the persons who lacks the genetic mutation that obviates the bitter flavor inherent to Brussels sprouts, so I can’t stand to eat the damn things.

Now that’s what I call a post-convention “bounce.”
