Pro-life prisoner of conscience Mary Wagner arrested on Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Pro-life prisoner of conscience Mary Wagner appeared at College Park court Monday, following her arrest Saturday at an abortion center in the heart of Toronto’s trendy Bloor West Village.

The slender, dark-haired 41-year-old entered the Bloor West Village Women’s Clinic, located on the fourth floor of an office building at 2425 Bloor Street, shortly after 9:00 a.m. on December 12, carrying pro-life pamphlets in a bag also filled with red roses.

At about 11:30, Constables Emma Morley and Jason Keegan of Toronto Police Service 11 Division escorted Wagner from the building, and warned her that if she returned to the abortion center she would be arrested.

..She chose December 12 to attempt to counsel women at the abortion facility because it is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the Catholic tradition (protector of the unborn)

...Wagner told LifeSiteNews .. hoped to persuade the women seeking abortion to change their minds, by speaking to them in a way they could understand, “to speak to their hearts.”

She explained her reasons in an open letter published in April 2015 on the Witness for Church and Pope blog: “People have often asked me if I could not simply stay outside the area I am forbidden to enter, and in that way, avoid arrest.”

“But this question forgets something: the children scheduled to be killed will have no one to stand up for them. We will stop being present to them and to their mothers out of obedience to an immorally imposed restriction by those entrusted with authority.”

“If we think in terms of getting arrested or not getting arrested, we lose sight of Christ, hidden in: ‘the distressing disguise of the poor’ – those so poor, we cannot even see or hear them.”

No question she is courageous and has the moral high ground, and also no question she is violating property rights for a legally operating business.

Not sure what I think, but this woman has been getting herself repeatedly arrested like this for quite a while; has it saved any lives?

Probably. I think God’s law trumps property rights too.

Has what YOU have been doing for quite a while saved any lives?

So, basically, she’s been arrested several times and spent four years in jail for trespassing? Seems a little steep even for government prejudice.

My family visited Our Lady of Guadalupe basilica in Mexico City. It’s been a few years...but I seem to remember a huge facility, with lines of people waiting to get in...the plaza out front that folks would cross on their knees..then a smaller chapel in a garden area. There may’ve been an offering pot or two, but it was free to attend. Very moving.

” spent four years in jail for trespassing? Seems a little steep even for government prejudice.”

That was the point. She finally got Satan angry enough to do something ridiculous.

Well, since you ask, I’ve been involved in the pro-life movement for about 40 years. Without ever getting arrested or violating any laws, here are a few things I’m happy about:

I’ve joined March-for-Life and other marches; my first was the Right-to-Life trek to the California State Capitol from LA in 1976 for the Bicentennial.

In addition I’ve done sidewalk counseling and phone hotline counseling, designed and led parish programs, collected baby items for BirthRight, volunteered with Operation Rescue, and ran the pro-life booth at the County Fair. Most recently I have managed the pro-life display at my church as well as selecting the pro-life literature and voter guides to distribute at my parish.

I have donated regularly to Priests for Life, American Life League, HLI, C-Fam, my diocesan Life Mission, and others. I’ve written numerous letters over the decades to newspapers, elected officials and organizations.

So, I do have hope that by giving countless hours and dollars to the cause of innocent life, I may in some small way have contributed to saving a child’s life, thanks be to God.
