I took a quick look but haven’t found any such Scots unit in the service of France at that time; the late 1700s. However the Swiss Guards were well known. See: http://military.wikia.com/wiki/Swiss_Guard. In the War of the Spanish Succession (c. 1704) there was a small unit, apparently, of Scots in the French Gardes du Corps (cavalry). The British raised Scots regiments after the creation of the United Kingdom. Maybe the author you cited was talking about a UK regiment and not a French one?

Trump’s statements are much less a support of Erdogan than they are respecting national sovereignty and supposed NATO allies.

I rather imagine that when Trump is fully informed on exactly what Erdogan is and intends, his attitude will change.

Agreed. Trump likes strong leaders and make no mistake Erdogan is a strong man. He has also expressed his inclination not to interfere in regimes with these types of leaders such as Assad ,Hussein and Gaddafi when they were alive. None those are/were paragons of virtue. I can't imagine him taking a piece out of Erdogan before he has even set foot in the WH like some arrogant neocon which he isn't. He has now repeatedly expressed the fundamental interest is the US nation-state and not foreign entanglements except ISIS which is a special case.

I found the “Quentin Durward” problem. That novel was set in the early to mid 1400s. Swiss guards came in later. They’re famous for guarding the Pope, and in France, as the king’s royal guard. At that time they wore red coats faced white. There’s a monument in Switzerland to their heroic last stand.

Gulen and Estrogen were best of political friends up until 2013 when there was a fall out over something. During that time Estrogen gave Gulen & Co everything they asked for. This “coup” has seen the arrest of most of those known as Gulen supporters - police. education, judiciary, mil, etc.

There will be a rally in Ankara with both secularist opposition and members of Estrogen’s party speaking.

The above report is according to a reporter this AM in Ankara on CNN.

Back in the good old days, the government would have brought in TAF jets, strafed and napalmed the lot - as they did in the mid 60s.

The Assad’s kept power for decades by not having seconds or high level aids -no inner circle. The Assad’s deal directing with 50 plus key people throughout the government. They take calls from or meet individually with the Assad’s, No contact between these people is formally allowed, if they are found to be associates they are at high risk of wrest, interrogation, torture and imprisonment.

So, nobody but the Assad’s see the big picture. This probably the system Erdogan wants to create.

Given the presidential guard no doubt carries some prestige, these people are at least aquinted with many prominent agency heads, law makers and underlings. Erdogan can’t have it.

Erdogan needs loyalty and historical ignorance being preferred.

An analogy would be Obama’s 20-something dimwit White House press corp.
