There is NO way to spin this. This is a very, very bad shoot. It's on video.

The victim said he asked the cop why he shot him and he said “I don’t know”.

I truly have never seen a man in a less threatining position than the one that gentleman was in.

What drives me crazy too is that he was treated like a criminal from the get go. Why does any American, especailly one helping an autistic man, need to immediately lie on the ground an put their hands up when officers show up? Can’t our officers assess a situation and act accordingly?

Shouldnt this bother every American? No offense meant directed towards you, just more of a hypothetical.

Why did you say it’s on video? It’s not.

I'd still boggle at someone saying that they didn't even feel the ice pick at first but I take your meaning 😊

Why do you say it’s on video? Maybe you shouldn’t believe/perpetuate everything you read.

Yes it is amazing. Everything from “I had no idea I was hit”, to “it felt like someone hit me with a baseball bat”.

Amazing, isn’t it? Everyone piling on, exclaiming how there’s video of it when there isn’t, going on the mere allegation of a guy. It could all be true, but there’s no actual evidence of it here! SMH

I agree, but perhaps the first area to improve is the training provided to police officers. Their job demands skills not only in the obvious areas, but a highly developed skill at interacting with other people in very charged circumstances.

I've watched professional security people from members of the Secret Service to doormen at nightclubs at work in many different circumstances. I have friends who are law enforcement officers, and I have heard from them about the kind of circumstances they jump into, and what worked and what didn't. In every case one of the most important skills is an ability to quickly size up the people involved in the situation, and figure out how to interact with them in a way which will lead to the desired outcome.

In some cases police training is woefully inadequate. Few police officers have any significant training in mental health related first aid, yet they are often involved with people with mental illness. Nobody would think it made sense to send out an ambulance with EMTs that didn't have any training in what to do about broken bones or heart attacks, but that's just what happens in many cases involving mentally ill or disabled people.

The vast majority of police officers instinctively understand how to relate to other people, and how to deal with a lot complex situations, just like everyone else. An excessive emphasis on particular procedures can lead to tragic mistakes, like the one in the video. Better training and a return to a more relationship based policing would be a good first step.

My father did. His analysis from a decade ago was pretty accurate. Policing is no longer what it was. The recruits it draws on and trains are more thrilled with authority and equipment than their core function as officers of the courts and to serve the people.

Police recruits today are not selected based on intellect and critical thinking. They are selected and developed to be excitable, reactive and easily indoctrinated in system cultivated "group think"

Thank You for your conversational advice.

You’ve got a point. We should insist that the police release all of THEIR video footage so that there’s a 100% clear picture.

The fact that the PD put out a statement that the officer *may* have been shooting at the autistic man and accidentally shot the prone man instead doesn’t factor into this at all.

You posted a report merely relaying the guy’s allegation. It may be true, but I’d like actual evidence.

They tend to ignore the real cases of bad policing, because they are really about running interference for the black criminal subculture more than anything.

I can’t disagree with you. What I was addressing was that
you seemed to be suggesting that there was irony in the
fact that a behavioral therapist could not de-escalate a
cop who was about to shoot him. If that was not your
point then I missed something. No harm.

Yes, that was my point, but it was made somewhat in jest, and the matter is too recent, real and serious to make light of it. I am glad he didn't die.
