Turkey has said it will suspend the European Convention on Human Rights during a state of emergency declared in the aftermath of last weekend’s coup attempt.

“Turkey will suspend the European Convention on Human Rights insofar as it does not conflict with its international obligations,” the deputy prime minister, Numan Kurtulmus, was quoted as saying by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

The state of emergency will allow the government to rule by decree, passing bills that have the force of the rule of law unless they are overturned by parliament, where the majority of MPs belong to the ruling Justice and Development (AK) party.

Perhaps. But I’d counsel against trying to guess; St. Paul is quite clear that he will be “revealed” not unearthed by a bunch of people engaged in Holmesian detective work.

IOW, you nor anyone else will know until EVERYONE knows, and there isn’t a whit you can do to change that.

No, they voted to cut the throats of their colleagues. None of Erdogan’s allies will be arrested.

The problem is not “let the place burn” if this were like Venezuela, where you could contain the problem, then I would be tempted to let them burn, or flush themselves down the drain, whichever metaphor you prefer.

However, the worst case here is Erdogan blundering his way into a general Middle East War. What happens in Turkey will impact Kurdistan. Erdogan has removed all the restraints upon Turkey that Ataturk imposed after the fall of the Ottomans.

With the Armenians gone, or under Russian protection in Armenia, the Kurds are the only “other” Erdogan has. This may spread out of Turkey to Iraq, Syria, and potentially to therefore, Lebanon, Jordan, and ultimately Israel.

Maybe I’m just a pessimist, but nothing good comes from this.

There us a large Christian community, largely Eastern Rite Catholics, in southern Turkey, centered on Adana, Mersin, Anatolia.

They are very much at risk.

***There us a large Christian community, largely Eastern Rite Catholics, in southern Turkey***

There was a large community of Christians in Iraq too but they had to flee their homes to Syria, some were even murdered, their churches burned, right under the nose of our Republican president Bush. Now Christians are being slaughtered in Syria right under the nose of our Democrat president Obama.

See the pattern here.
