The United States will have to comply with New Zealand law when it sends a naval ship here in November, Prime Minister John Key says.
...
A surface vessel, which would not be nuclear-powered or carry nuclear weapons, would be the most likely US ship to come, Mr Ayson said.
"That doesn't mean that New Zealand has got some sort of victory here over American policy. It just means the two sides are finding another way to work around this."
Greenpeace, however, hailed the announcement as a victory for New Zealand, echoing the sentiments of investigative journalist Nicky Hager who helped in the anti-nuclear campaign three decades ago.
The organisation's executive director, Russel Norman, said New Zealand should be immensely proud of fighting to be nuclear-free.
He said ordinary New Zealanders had stood up to the mightiest military power on Earth, one that was also a traditional ally - and won.

If the chi-coms or some other enemy attacks and NZ wants our support will they fuss if a Nimitz class carrier shows up??
Idiots and commie operatives in New Zealand.
The Navy might drop off a certain High Court justice while they’re in town.
I would not show disrespect of New Zealand’s wishes and provide nuclear assistance to them if they were attacked. That would be wrong to help them in that way. Guess they would be on their own. Good luck!
Screw the goofy Kiwis. I bet if China were attacking them they’d be glad to have our nuclear powered boats protect them.
New Zealand has just put a target on her own back.
It is worth noting - and perhaps not widely understood - that New Zealand honoured its commitment under the ANZUS Treaty by sending troops to Afganistan in response to an attack on the metropolitan area of the United States. The US had suspended its obligations to New Zealand (perfectly reasonably under the circumstances) but New Zealand didn’t use that as an excuse not to man up.
New Zealand is far from anywhere. They have that luxury.
Instead we’ll send a diesel powered ship burning bunker oil.
LOL
Enviros are such morons.
While we were transiting through the bay to our berth, we "accidentally" ran one of them over and it sunk, splashing it's occupants.
It turned out that the residents of Auckland loved having us there, it is the GOV that didn't want us, plus the handful of Greenpeace a-holes.
Maybe the Chinese will let the NZ Navy (is there such a thing?) dock in one of its many new areas of the South China Sea?
These are the competitors to sell the Invasion of New Zealand to Australians:
Let’s get to Philly and coal up the USS Olympia! That’s a carbon footprint to be proud of! “You may pollute when you are ready, Gridley!”
HMNZS Te Kaha is currently maneuvering in the warning area south of Hawaii as part of RIMPAC 2016. Sure does not sound like they want nothing to do with military cooperation.
