A MAN is in custody after he set himself alight and drove a vehicle filled with gas bottles into a Western Sydney police station underground carpark, in what is suspected to be an attempted terror attack.

It is understood the bottles did not detonate when the car rammed into the gates of Merrylands police station carpark about 7pm tonight.

The driver was not arrested until about 8pm, after police closed off Memorial Ave, and he was taken to Westmead Hospital to be treated for minor burns.

Fair enough.

Here they don’t describe the suspect when they are asking for the public’s help in spotting him, unless he’s a white male, of course!

I just want them to have the chance to talk to him before he dies. Beyond that I don’t really care what happens to him, but the chance to question him is important.

“Don’t” should be “seldom”

It’s a mixed bag here - sometimes you get a decent description that clearly includes racial or likely ethnic background. Sometimes you don’t.

In this case, though, it just seems to be normal practice - no point in giving an ID until they have had time to do more investigation.

I noticed Gippsland was trending on the scanner radio app. Is that where this happened?

No - Gippsland is another state entirely - quite near where I live now. I need to check what is happening!

Could it have been ‘Merrylands’ that was trending rather than Gippsland? Because that is where this was - and as far as I can tell Gippsland is currently it’s normal boring self.

No. It's Gippsland for sure. I just put it on the scanner and it's tomb quiet. Not much to do there?

Gippsland is a rural area east of Melbourne, Victoria - quite large but reasonably sparsely populated. Occasionally gets earthquakes that are large by Australian standards but small by everybody elses. Lots of good farmland, and some coal fired power plants, but most of the time when you hear about it on the news, it’s about the weather. Lovely place to visit, but generally not exciting.

Actually it harkens back further than that: the 1983 Beirut Marine Barracks Bombing. Here is a link to the Wikipedia article on the bombing and the pertinent portion dealing with the nature of the bomb:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Beirut_barracks_bombings

“The explosive mechanism was a gas-enhanced device consisting of compressed butane in canisters employed with pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) to create a fuel-air explosive.[9][10] The bomb was carried on a layer of concrete covered with a slab of marble to direct the blast upward.[39] Despite the lack of sophistication and wide availability of its component parts, a gas-enhanced device can be a lethal weapon. These devices were similar to fuel-air or thermobaric weapons, explaining the large blast and damage.[40] An after-action forensic investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) determined that the bomb was so powerful that it probably would have brought down the building even if the sentries had managed to stop the truck between the gate and the building.”

However, the Sydney attacker got it wrong in that you need high explosives to provide the energy the gas will enhance, and burst the cylinders to begin with.

However, setting yourself on fire and crashing the car probably should receive some points for improvisation.

I’m ashamed of myself for not remembering that. Thank you for the reminder Captain.

I am absolutely not trying to hijack your thread. I was responding to the “just over a year ago, a young man shouting Islamic slogans shot and killed a police employee at Parramatta Police Station” in your post.

Suspected attack? What does it take in Austrailia to figure out a action is a terror attack?

Sorry - it’s just that so often I see any discussion here involving Australia turn into yet another gun control thread mostly because Americans have been fed a pack of lies about Australia and guns as you point out. It derails so many discussions.

Gun crime in Australia is reasonably rare, but it’s certainly not unheard of. There are plenty of dumb restrictions and gun laws, but the country isn’t gun free - law abiding citizens can own firearms and over a million do (out of a population approaching about twenty five million) and there are also plenty of illegal guns out there as well.

It gets frustrating to see the incorrect information shared around the US for domestic political purposes, but more significantly it also puts even our far less than perfect and overly limited access to guns here in Australia at risk, when this is used as a political football in America. There are a lot of people here in Australia who would like to see a total ban and they get traction out of every confected controversy in the US.
