She might have done well to acknowledge the older work and that extensive quotations from it followed...as outing Michelle’s uncredited copying.

Good thinking!

That would have been an effective stored weapon for those who understand politics is unfortunately a blood sport. It would have had to be developed in advance and then appropriately inserted in the campaign.

The good news is that there is little or no evidence Trump is a compromised or beholden insider. The bad news is he/we may suffer some broken bones learning how to play politics.

But I think, like many others may, let's get it started.

Betcha he didn’t. Buckley helped him write it. MSM was all ready to shout “plagiarism.” Ended up Buckley quoted himself in part of the speech. Whoops, MSM.

Some writers speculate Donald is fine with this fake controversy, because it has now raised Melania’s profile nationwide. It has caused people to subconciously think of both Michelle Obama and Melinia Trump at once, and as First Ladies.

Bingo! This will ultimately play out to the benefit of Trump.

Though I must say, I was uneasy when I heard Melania enunciate the words "your word is your bond." Not that I recognized the phrase as one Michelle Obama had previously mouthed. But the words struck a false note with me, not sure why. Maybe this part of her speech seemed a little overwritten, not something Melania herself would say.

Now the story seems to be that Melania picked those words herself, and read them over the phone to the speechwriter. Whatever happened, it's a tempest in a teapot. Only the snottiest of the media elites will continue to carp, and when the tea leaves settle, Trump will be ahead with real Americans.

Imbecilic mistake, especially for a “co-author” of books.
You acknowledge the source when you plagiarize FGS.

I have an idea...call me crazy...but how about writing your own damn speeches.

Even our Founding Fathers collaborated on speeches and documents. It's not a matter of not being able to think for themselves. Great speeches are like great music and lyrics, often the product of collaboration.

In one sentence of Melania's speech there were three very common phrases that Michelle Obama had used in a previous speech and many other politicians use continually. Your word is your bond, work hard to get what you want and another one.

It was stupid to make a big deal about this. It detracts from Melania's very good speech which was completely different from the leftist cliches Michelle Obama spouts out.

Melania did not say she was ashamed to be an American like Michelle Obama has done.

She should have just said she looked at other speeches including Michelle Obama’s speech and then included similar wording.

She should not make a big deal about this.

Michelle Obama did not originate these phrases. Her speechwriters borrowed them from many previous speeches.

To me this event is similar to so many past Trump controversies it seems orchestrated. Looking at this from 10,000 feet it is a given that Melania would be attacked for something. So, they were handed something on a silver platter. This gave the news cycles something negative to center on for days on something Trump turns into an example of what a reasonable and gracious employer he is.

The negative press turned this act into the crime of the century. The culprit should be hanged or at least fired. After days of breathless accusations of theft, we find an employee is taking the blame for making a mistake. Trump treats this woman (possible African-American ) with compassion for her crime. But wait, isn't Trump a misogynist?

If anyone deserves an apology for plagiarism it is Victor Hugo's Les Misérables. The press as Jean Valjean and Trump as prisoner 24601. This has played out like a scene from that famous musical depicting grace and mercy triumphing over the law.

Remember Melania's final words of her speech: “It Would Not Be a Trump Contest Without Excitement and Drama”

The possibility exists that this whole thing was engineered by Donald to begin with, with wife and speech-writer in on planning and execution.

Remember, if you think you are in a 2d chess game with Trump, get ready to be thwacked from above.

I totally agree. At the very least, the candidate or person giving the speech makes a list of points, ideas, phrases, etc and then talks to write, who puts it together, person giving speech checks it, makes corrections, and voila.

It was simply inexcusable.

I wouldn’t allow my kid to get off that lightly.

McIver has a very forgiving boss.

Melania isn’t a politician.

As has been surmised, she admired Michelle Obama’s address and wanted to use the words in her own address.

The way it came out, didn’t sound like Melania - doesn’t the woman have an original thought?

And you can look elsewhere in the speech for what was ripped off or stolen.

Anyway, that’s not the way to introduce yourself to the country and people take note about what your words or lack of them reveal about you as a person.

Plagiarism is a serious offense for good reason.

What the hell are you talking about? Only morons and losers and deniers of reality with their heads up their rear ends think this is some “brilliant strategy” instead of a stupid, needless f—k up by a bunch of amateurs. What, pray tell, you political genius, is the “masterstroke” here? And don’t say “to get melania in peoples minds like Michelle.” That is moronic. If they think of her in the same sentence as Michelle, they think “Oh yeah. She’s. The one who took part of the first lady’s speech”

Michelle’s “original” words were cribbed from somebody else’s motivational speech, which makes Michelle’s speechwriter also something of a “plagiarist”.

The big difference is, that when Michelle spoke the words, the underlying sincerity was not there. Melania, in saying almost the same words, conveys a sense of underlying belief in the words, and a sincere tone.

Plagiarism is copying another’s words, usually without attribution, and is normally of a single source. Copying the words of many others, with some pro forma nod to attribution, is considered to be “research”, and is the basis of awarding masters and doctoral degrees.

Good idea, but not many people except Churchill and Lincoln have really written their own speeches. In recent decades in the USA, speechwriters are nearly universal for political candidates who can afford them. Maybe candidates for local offices still write their own speeches, who knows?

“Michelle Obama did not originate these phrases. Her speechwriters borrowed them from many previous speeches. “

A former Hillary speechwriter, forget her name, now works for Moochelle. She recognized the words and alerted the Hillary camp. That’s how they had a copy of the speech so fast.
