I think you are behind the curve on that one. There has been a purge going on for nearly 8 years. I doubt the "conservative" percentage of the armed forces is anywhere near what it has been traditionally.

Any military leader who would just allow themselves to be "purged" without fighting back shouldn't be wearing the uniform anyway. They could have and should have blown the whistle on the crazy stuff this current set of political leaders have done. If they quietly and supinely allowed themselves to be retired, they didn't have the sand to stand up for themselves and what was right to begin with.

The troops are solid, as are most of the younger officers and NCOs. They would never go along with overthrowing the government or firing on their fellow citizens, period.
