George W. Bush: I could be ‘the last Republican president’
POLITICO reposted on Hot Air ^ | July 19, 2016 | By SHANE GOLDMACHER, POLITICO July 19, 2016 reposted by John Sexton

A story published Tuesday by Politico says President George W. Bush told former aides at a staff reunion in April that he is concerned he could be the last Republican president:

When it came to talk of 2016, though, the mood was grim. The Republican primary had just narrowed to essentially two choices, each anathema to these card-carrying members of the GOP establishment: Ted Cruz and, even more egregiously, Donald Trump.

But few were as dark about the Republican Party’s future as former President Bush himself. In a more intimate moment during the reunion, surrounded by a smaller clutch of former aides and advisers, Bush weighed in with an assessment so foreboding that some who relayed it could not discern if it was gallows humor or blunt realpolitik.

“I’m worried,” Bush told them, “that I will be the last Republican president.”

Politico uses this moment to launch into a story about what it calls the “GOP’s shadow convention,” essentially behind-the-scenes preparations by the party’s establishment wing to attempt to regain control of the party after what they see as Trump’s inevitable loss:

“There’s a school of thought that Trump, who’s gonna get crushed, will somehow teach the party a lesson and they’ll get it out of their system,” said Stuart Stevens, who was Mitt Romney’s chief strategist in 2012. “I don’t have confidence in that.”

Indeed, many are already at work to rearrange the fractured pieces to their liking—and advantage.

[…]

“The day after the election we’ll get back to being the anti-Clinton party,” said Alex Conant, a veteran Republican strategist and longtime Rubio adviser. “Which we’re actually good at being.”

“We’ll have a really good midterm,” he predicted, and a deep bench for 2020.

Former President George W. Bush is not attending the Republican convention this year.

Jeb was a sad power play. The old money, one world establishment of the RNC is floundering in its own selfishness and non-attention to the will of the Republican voters (as we have seen). The will of the people and the RINO primary candidates passed in the night and Trump was there to pick up the torch FOR THE PEOPLE. The RINO establishment still cannot deal with the REALITY of the situation. And the people are totally fed up with establishment lack of action against the Rat liberals and well as outright pandering for self serving purposes.

So, IMHO, that is what Jeb was about...a bad joke. A weak candidate that the Repub voters wanted nothing to do with.

"I’ve been a member of FR since 1999. All of us, we literally busted our ass and gave our last pennies to see Bush eek out 2 presidential victories. We posted daily threads (”A Day in the Life of President Bush”) and danced at his inaugurations. And this is the thanks we get?"

There comes a time where one has to bow their head and admit they had been "had". I was convinced back then that GW Bush would have been a one term president if it hadn't been for 9/11.

A number of well meaning initiatives under Bush have bourne poisonous fruit-the Patriot Act (fiercely debated here back then), expansion of secret courts and NSA surveillance, the growth of crony capitalism...

GW Bush, in character IMHO, is a good man. But he holds the taint of something going back to the deal struck when Reagan won the nomination back in 1980.

My hope is that Trump truly is a change agent (and not in the sense of Obama's "change"). If Trump can break the shackles that the entitled class throws upon the people of the US, that's a good start. And if Trump sets a team to hunt down and incarcerate the a**holes who have so far plagued the American public with indignities with impunity, so much the better.

Well as long as we’re talking about the ‘accomplishments’ of George W. Bush, let’s not forget the following:

After all that prattle about the ‘Axis of Evil’, GWB lost his balls after overthrowing Saddam Hussein, and let the other two legs of that ‘Axis’ survive (Iran, and North Korea), at the time I found it hard to accept that GWB’s fixation on Saddam was just personal, since Saddam had attempted to arrange the assassination of Poppy Bush in Kuwait, and that GWB just wanted to ‘even up the score’. Now however, I find it entirely believable.

Speaking of North Korea, GWB invited the author of ‘The Aquariums of Pyongyang’, Kang Chol-hwan who had escaped from one of the North Korean prison-torture camps, to the White House to discuss what the U.S. could do to help the North Korean people in their never ending oppression by Kim Jong Il. That was in June 2005.

So what did GWB’s Administration decide to do to ‘help’?

They took North Korea OFF the list of terrorist supporting nations which enabled and empowered Kim Jong Il to continue and to INCREASE his tyrannical behavior and it was all in the deluded belief that such action on GWB’s part would be of benefit to those vaunted ‘Six Party Talks’ and we can see how those ‘talks’ worked out so far as ending North Korea’s nuclear aspirations. Kim Jon Un is continuing to develop and expand that nuclear program that the ‘Six Party Talks’ was supposed to halt.

In short, the last Bush in the White House sold the North Korean people up the river in their efforts to ‘help’ them.

And in a final slap, I found it completely disgusting and dishonorable the way GWB allowed Scooter Libby to twist in the wind, refusing to pardon him, and commuting his sentence only after extreme pressure was brought to bear on him by Vice President Dick Cheney.

Lest we forget, GWB also treated those border patrol agents Ramos and Compean like dirt, refusing to pardon them until the day before he left the White House, and even then would mean they would continued to be incarcerated until March 20, 2009.

George W. Bush was fond of saying that “when history is written, we’ll all be dead”, but history is being written even as I type these words, and that is why I say that George W. Bush is a no-good lying sack of RINO shit, and I wouldn’t piss on the sonuvabitch if he was running down the proverbial street on fire, and that goes for his half wit brothers and his ‘New World Order’ big daddio too.

Sounds like a movie or book tittle: “The Last RINO”.

Jenna Bush agrees.

We posted daily threads (”A Day in the Life of President Bush”) and danced at his inaugurations. And this is the thanks we get?

What, you want him to sugar coat it?

This supposedly his private fear, nothing more.

i am to but the fact is if there are no more Republican president’s the blame falls squarely in his lap...and though GWB has blamed everything his reckless spending, cowardice to stand up to the rats during his second term and desire to given amnesty to illegals in 2005 was the turning point in the downfall of the GOP...

yup- i was in the streets of NYC during the summer of 2004 at the RNC convention with other Freepers and members of Protest Warrior day after day, fighting liberals mano-a-mano and standing up for GWB and the GOP yet they’ve done nothing but spit in our faces ever since...

I watched him cover for Obama at the Dallas cops’ memorial—the same week the Saudi 9/11 docs were coming out. What do you want to bet that Obama knows the dirty stink about Bush ties to the Sauds, and W had to play nice to keep Poppy’s butt out of the fire?

No one did more to facilitate the illegal alien inundation than GHWB and GWB.

I used to admire them. Trust me. That's ancient history, and it ain't gonna happen again.
Do you suppose that the dictionary definition of RINO, would have pictures of the Bushes next to it?

I got booted off the forum for a while back in the early 2000’s for calling him El Presidente Jorge Bush as I watched an entire section of the town I lived in turn into little Juarez with the morning line at the DMV stretching around the parking lot.
