The man who could have stopped Donald Trump
Business Insider ^ | July 19th, 2016 | Oliver Darcy

CNN couldn't stop Donald Trump. Neither could Fox News.

Some of the nation's most influential conservatives, from Glenn Beck to Bill Kristol, were powerless. Karl Rove and the Bush family had no effect. Scandal after scandal failed to put a chink in his armor.

And the 16 other GOP contenders, comprising some of the party's brightest and budding stars, proved to be impotent.

But some observers say that one man may have had the power to prevent Donald Trump's accession within the Republican Party: Matt Drudge.

"If Drudge had come out really negatively against Trump and had supported someone who would have played well with his reader base like Cruz, it would have been much harder for Trump to win," BuzzFeed political reporter and editor Andrew Kaczynski told Business Insider, referring to Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.

The news mogul, one of the most mysterious individuals in the media industry, operates entirely outside the New York City and Washington, D.C., apparatus. He is seemingly accountable to no one. He is rarely spotted in public and holds close company with only a few select people. Reporters tip him off to stories through email or instant messages but never expect a reply, knowing he is unlikely to write back.

I believe two things about Trump appeals to people...1) he’s not a POLITICIAN and 2) he set specific Priorities that the normal American wants dealt with now, ie Wall, taxes. (Which the elected GOP seem to be wimpy on). Oh, and he’s not a WIMP.

I don’t know how “Cruzers” are involved with this as much as the “Anti-Trumpers”. Stop bashing those who supported Ted Cruze and let us all pull together to support Trump. I am supporting Trump but was pulling for Cruz. Quit being divisive, Mr. Obama.

Consequently, I think the story is bogus all together and they keep missing the mark and root cause behind the support for Trump. The “blame” (as they would like to call it) goes to the REPUBLICAN ESTABLISHMENT PARTY. For 9 years, a grass roots movement has worked to reshape the republican party. The GOP-E has fought the Tea Party Supporters and Conservatives the WHOLE way. Even many of the chosen and elected “true conservatives” managed to get converted after taking office and fell in line with the rank and file GOP moderates. They lost their spine and reneged on their campaign promises. The Republican Party has a disenfranchised voter base and gravitated toward an actual outsider. They went even more extreme (in political terms) to find someone that would lead and act decisively and be unassociated with establishment influenced. TRUMP ended up being that candidate.

The Republican Party is to “blame” or “credit” with the nomination of Trump. Had they governed as they promised and fought against the rule of the last 7.5 years, Trump likely would not have even run.

I hope Trump delivers on his promises. He has to win the presidency. And I support him. Please support my support for him. Thank you.

Cruz did it to himself. Just like he's doing now. The guys a total phony. Drudge has been spot on in exposing MSM bias.

Cruz and all the other candidates elitist actions drove the majority of the voters to Trump not Drudge. I haven’t been to Drudges site in years but it became obvious the only choice was Trump.

The morning after election night is going to be SOOOOO much fun!

The long pundit faces. The soiled diaper looks as they play back Hillary’s drunken concession speech over and over. Going to be even more fun that watching them freak-out on the BBC the day after the Brexit vote.

Oh well, they should have done something about turning our neighborhoods into third world slums. Eventually they will be forced to admit publically that the nomination was Trumps the moment he came out against the invasion.

Drudge didn’t. He reported the truth not MSM fairy tales. Trump won. Nothing was given to him, but it helps losers like Krystal, Beck and Cruz to lie to deflect the truth.

Exactly. Had the so-called conservatives in Congress followed through on their promised agenda to the voters and taken on the president and his leftist policies instead of rolling over like dogs, we wouldn’t be talking about Trump the GOP presidential nominee today. You screw the people long enough they will fight back, well some of us anyway.

"Eventually they will be forced to admit publically that the nomination was Trumps the moment he came out against the invasion."

No matter the truth and wisdom of that statement, I don't know that they'll ever be able to cross that bridge.

But, deep down in their dark hearts, in the dark of night, that's what will haunt them.

Yet despite his reclusiveness, Drudge holds a firm grip on the conservative news cycle. As the founder and operator of the Drudge Report, he influences and often creates news narratives.

might i suggest a correction: "he influences and often creats news 'counter' narratives."

If Ronald Reagan was alive he would have trounced Trump!

George Washington would have cleaned Trump’s clock!

I'm not so sure of that in the context of today's dynamics, the challenges we face given the political establishment and media as it is...

MSM decoder ring: “We needed Cruz to win because Hillary would have cut him to pieces”

The one good thing about the 2016 election is we are now seeing how deep the rabbit hole goes.
The reality is the MSM determines who leads the Country.
If you try to oppose them, they will unite against you.

Narrow minded individuals who have no foresight, no hindsight, and no clue as to what is going on, hold up hope that their 1 per center will prevail against the will of literally 100's of millions of people.

They give delusion a whole new chapter of meaning.

"If Drudge had come out really negatively against Trump..."

Yea, right. I was one of the FR crowd that was on the weekly Sunday night Drudge thread, and remember quite well the non-stop bashing Drudge did on Schwarzenegger after whatshisname, Gray Davis(?), was recalled, and 70+ candidates ran for the job opening.

His ranting lent truth to the "Every knock a boost" theory of publicity.

FWIW, some CA types have said Drudge proved to be prescient in his warnings about Arnie.

Exactly, nobody could stop Trump because he is what the frustrated Republican base wants. If somehow Hillary were to win this election, the next Republican nominee would be insurrection.

For that matter the GOP Congress growing a spine and DOING ITS JOB once in awhile could have “stopped” Trump.
