Melania Trump’s Speech Bears Striking Similarities to Michelle Obama’s 2008 Address
NY Times ^ | 7/19/2016 | MAGGIE HABERMAN

Mrs. Trump, Monday night:

“From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily lives. That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to our son. And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

Mrs. Obama, in her 2008 speech:

“Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them. And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.

Really, again I bet over half the wives of people running have given similar speeches of similar content.

What a great husband. He’s capable and a hard worker. Morals, future for children and a good education.

It is not the similar content, but the repeated word for word phrasing that is the issue.

“The difference is Melania believes the words she is saying”

Those words are common values that have been spoken by parents to children probably forever. Michelle wasn’t the first to use them. My folks said similar words to me and I to my three children. Yawn......

There’s a difference between “stealing” the idea and stealing the words. That’s the crucial difference. Idea theft is rampant and legal (except for patented ideas). It can’t be defined or regulated. Borrowing of language can be.

But I don’t think there is a legal issue here anyway. It’s more of the same old: vilify and demonize the other political side.

I am so tired of it at this point.

Her speechwriters should have figured another way for her to express her feelings without cribbing from a speech that a lot of people remembered.

It’s the wife of a candidate and actually I agree with you. If Trump allowed it to happen it’s brilliant. So far everything he has done was taken from Obama is 2008 play book on how to bamboozle America. He continues to prove that he’s a Washington outsider. The Washington elites of the Republican Party are ignoring the campaign which it really excites most Americans who are fed up with the current situation. Let the New York’s limes and Heather talking heads make this the issue for the next couple days.

Trump I believe really does have the Moxie and the brains to get elected. Let them pick on Mrs. Trump has most American women will take her side. She is believable, very likable, and a family lady standing by her man

So far in sum it has done better than, say, the supposed skilled executive Mitt Romney ran in 2012.

Oh, the press and even her updated Wikipedia profile keep referring to her telling Matt Lauer last night that she had only read it over once, when it was pretty clear that he was asking her if she had been studying it on the flight she had just been on from NYC to Cleveland.

Just heard NPR’s blurb. They said the speech is “drawing attention” for “echoing” the Michelle speech. They closed by saying the Trump camp had released a statement saying that Melania’s speech was “beautiful and a success”.

It's indicative of how powerful Melania's speech was that the msm is falling all over themselves claiming plagiarism. She was magnificent last night and will be a force of nature on the campaign trail.

I loved her last night! What class, charm and dignity!
