The party did not abandoned the ruling elite of the Republican Party. The elite abandoned the rank and file of the party. The ruling elite of the party so ignored the rank and file that they allowed a candidate to seize the party that is not a normal mainstream Republican.
The reason Trump is the candidate is the elite tried to give us Jeb Bush, Lindsey (MiniMac) Graham, Christi etc. The only candidate that oppossed the elite was Trump and Cruz. Cruz was my guy. The media gave us Trump with more than a billion dollars worth of free coverage. They did this because they thought he was the weakest candidate and are probably right. Cruz would have destroyed Hillary.
What the Media never expected is that Trump will also destroy Clinton.

Kasich pledged to support the Republican nominee. He has reneged on his pledge.
Kasich won only one primary, his home state of Ohio.
He did poorly in almost every other primary.
Kasich refuses to attend the convention in his home state. It is much better if Kasich stays away.

In essence, what is happening is Trump is flushing out the politicians that say they are Republican but are really Democrats.
