It was set up to benefit an intra-party challenge in 2020. They are already planning on challenging Trump for the nomination in 2020 BECAUSE THEY KNOW HE IS GOING TO WIN AND BE A SITTING PRESIDENT!
If they thought he was going to lose, they would not have bothered because Trump would not run in 2020.
Add to that, the extra benefit of throwing out the bound-delegates this year and inserting Cruz or Jeb!, which was the original goal.
This is all about the Bush Dynasty, and the people have been very clear they want no more Bushies or anybody stained with them in the party.

Actually, Mabel, the same people fought the same battle against the RNC in 2012 when Trump wasn’t around. Go read up on the Ben Ginsberg rules (Romney’s guy) and the battle royal over the rules in 2012. Same result as 2016. The RNC retained the power in the party and tried to use it to coronate Jeb Bush this year. Thankfully they failed.
It has nothing to do with Trump. But in 2020, the RNC will be back trying to nominate a Bush or a Romney or a McCain and their job will be so much easier under the rules adopted.
