Cruz is right, but not in the way he thinks. The Media
did play an outsized role in Trump's nomination by showcasing what they thought were his most extreme positions in order to paint the GOP as racist and xenophobic.
It just turned out that many Americans thought Trump's proposals were common sense.

To back up your point, Cruz often took opposing positions from Trump, thinking that would elevate his standing. In reality, it confirmed that the Republican primary voters sided with Trump's positions and rejected Cruz. In fact, it seemed as if the rejection of Cruz increased as he increasingly took positions in opposition to Trump.
