To appease the Cruz supporters, who are still whining because Trump didn’t come sucking up to them as is their birthright.

I think he should be pulled from the lineup. He’s not stable. He still believes his father’s “prophecy” that HE is supposed to be the nominee. He’s going to sound like a fool. Hopefully that will reflect on him and not on Trump.
I read somewhere that ~100 neverTrump/pro-Cruz delegates switched to pro-Trump when the speaking slot was offered and accepted. I am inclined to believe it. Manafort knew he had to kill neverTrump hard and fast. The speaking slot was a part of that strategy.
Also bear in mind, by the time Cruz speaks, the delegates will have been ginned into a ‘go Trump, defeat Hillary!’ frenzy. If Cruz steps out of line, the boos will be deafening.
Last but not least, Newt speaks a mere two slots after Cruz. If Ted says something stupid, he’ll get the Gingrich treatment. If you were Cruz, would you risk that?
