“They are, indeed, the thin blue line between us and the worst among us. “

They are often the worst of us, like the ones that like to shoot family dogs, or the FBI agents that shot a kid in the face with an M-16 because they told him to exit the vehicle so he reached for his seatbelt. Or maybe the ones that are on the take. Or the ones that shot a man in the back running away.

Cops are NOT innocent of the feelings against them.

Most cops are just doing a good job. But they don’t speak out against those that aren’t.

“Alas, if the past is prologue, there will be no reflection or remorse in black America or at the White House this summer. Withal, lawmen and soldiers will still honor their duty. Cops are indeed the new centurions, all that stands between us and the abyss. Our prayers are with all those who serve and protect, all those men and women who go in harm’s way.”

Police certainly have to do helpful and positive community relations work among their own, too.
Some of the shaved-head, steroid-shooting, bloused-boot, clenched-jaw officers simply must become more courteous.
If they cannot even successfully engage the most friendly and law-abiding in the community, it will be a challenge engaging others who aren't so nice.

As a law-abiding, tax-paying, friendly, and decent person who hasn't had so much as a parking ticket in decades...I find the law enforcement us v. them attitude of the past fifteen years or so rather tiresome. They really need to start winning hearts and minds to truly reinforce our support for them.

I understand your sentiments, but at this point in time, there definitely something going on here. Whether or not it is coordinated, Obama blaming the victims is not helping.
