How did he like the way it flew?

It flew just fine. It was the landings he didn't like. His brakes gave out on landing once and he ended up in a ditch. Got a purple heart for that one. His hydraulics were shot out. Those planes are hard to stop without brakes.

Like most old soldiers, he didn't talk about the war much. At least not to his family. Maybe his war buddies but not us. What was weird was that after putting 2000 or more hours on the Corsair, he never flew again.

I guess you have to be in their shoes, as it were, to understand why they kept their experiences to themselves. So much history but so much left untold, because it was heavy on the hearts of the tellers....
