I have never understood the claim that Indians are extinct. Indians are us. They assimilated into Western culture. How often have you heard someone mention they are a quarter Cherokee or something similar. Hispanics are generally at least part Indian. Just because the tribe was Inca, Mayan, or Aztec rather than Cherokee doesn't make them any less Indian.

In the US, “hispanic” = mestizo. Hispanic is an old word for Spaniards.
